I'd be looking for a Marshall 1974x or JTM45 (RI or clones). But I'm also intrigued by Jakedog's Budda 18 reccy and by the Origin 20 for the $$

seeing as you're looking for classic rock tones I'd recommend an orange AD30 head, it has a marshall like tone but is it's own thing, you could also do doom stoner rock as well as classic rock, it's a very good amp.

As an owner of the Marshall Origin 50 head, I would absolutely recommend an Origin 20 ( with a boost in front for more gain ). Fantastic cleans, power scaling, very flexible EQ and punches so far above its price. I have a bunch of Marshalls ( JCM/Plexi ) and still can't recommend these amps enough.

I’m thinking you mean this. Marshall Origin 20 with dual 12” in box. Oops, it’s a Studio Vintage not Origin.

The Budda is out of this world. It’s a little dark and mid forward, even for a Marshall style design. But with the push/pull pots for a mid shift and bright switch it’s wonderful.

Solid wood cab. Preamp section is PCB, but super heavy duty and high quality. Power section is hand wired. All the bits are chassis mounted. It’s a tank. Mine is 22 years old and has never so much as hiccuped. Light weight as well, for an amp this quality. My combo comes in right about 40 lbs.

If my memory serves me correctly I think Buddha sold out to Peavey and the Buddha built examples have the pointy knobs like your amp has. I was trying to buy a Buddy SD 18 @5-10 years ago but couldn’t find a deal,….and me being me who requires a deal on musical instruments…or I don’t make the move since I’m about 98% sure I’m a BF/SF Fender guy with amps

Budda did go to Peavey. The amps didn’t change at all. I remember reading something somewhere from Jeff Bober (builder and designer) who said under the hood, they were pretty much indistinguishable from the originals.

These can be had pretty easily for $700-$800. That’s a screaming deal for an amp with this kind of sound and build quality.

How about the Marshall DSL40CR? (the “CR” part is important because it addresses many of the issues of the older DSL40C)

40 advertised watts (but a pair of fixed-bias EL34s should put out more like 50 watts), 4 successively gainer voicings and comes with a Celestion V-Type speaker that suits it well. (The optional 6 button footswitch is pretty much a necessity to get the most out of it)

No it’s not a Plexi. A Plexi is a Plexi, but this amp still has an undeniable Marshall sound and an underrated clean channel. I only wish it weighed less than its 50 lbs.

(I really like what Friedman makes — essentially hot-rodded Marshalls, but they are pricier than the desired budget allows)
