Nothing, not even Robert Wagner’s simpering face, the dated Hal David lyric, and the prop guitar can take away from Marilyn McCoo’s stunning singing and great beauty.

She’ll always be a star to me.

She falls into great music that I really don't like.

    Great Pop!
All the 5th Dimension singers were brilliant.
Marilyn’s voice is so distinctive, clear and powerful.
I wonder if she’s really a lefty, or if the director just thought the guitar would fit the shot better held lefty.
    Enquiring minds want to know!;)
    Magnatone bass?

That’s how I feel about a lot of the music of Allison Krause and Rhonda Vincent. It takes all kinds.

In all the photos and videos that I’ve seen, she holds the microphone in her right hand.

Loved the 5th Dimension in Summer Of Soul.

It is just wrong at 0:50 when the bass line goes down a 5th and the bass player goes from the E up to the A string. Maybe they are winking at us.

I knew her from Solid Gold, I didn’t know her background, or that she was so talented as a vocalist. Very nice, and a bit of a surreal clip.

I remember Hart to Hart as well. My Mother was a big Natalie Wood fan. She was always trying to get me to watch West Side Story with her. Around the same time, we watched Solid Gold a lot together, and the Barbara Mandrell show, etc.

She would’ve missed the 5th Dimension era, but she liked Marilyn. She had seen people like James Brown from ten feet away when she was in college. She loved Tina Turner and Mick Jagger and Elvis. She had some of the Beatle’s very first 45’s, but didn’t check back in to music until the early ‘80’s. When she did, she went nuts on everything from the Bee Gees to Eric Clapton to Whitesnake.

Huge fan. And that song seems made for her. I used to tune in to Solid Gold to see her cover different songs every week. Thanks for this tribute thread!

The Fifth Dimension are a huge guilty pleasure for me. The "Hair" medley will always be a favorite.

I think she may have also appeared on her own with the tv show, It Takes a Thief. Or maybe I'm just thinking about other tv appearances.

What I really like is...Bill! (Wedding Bell Blues.)

In 1970, I played string bass with our high school swing choir. We had worked up a tight set of of mostly Bacharach and David material. Very hip stuff, musically, in an upbeat, yet suave way. I was saddened when they split up.

Wow. I cannot remember when I have last heard her name or that song. Takes me back a long way. I know that at one point this song was playing on the radio more often than not.

Big fan of The Fifth Dimension and Marilyn - great music. Beautiful voice. Always had a little "thing" for Marilyn, even as a young boy.

    ^^^Oh yeah^^^.

I've had the hots for her since I was a wee peegoo. You and I are gonna hafta fight.

She's from the Albert King/Dick Dale/Doyle Bramhall III school of guitarists--who play a righty guitar left-handed. Apparently ;)

    Nice! Ty.

I remember sometime in the late seventies when she and her husband Billy Davis hosted a TV variety type show,

and she did a duet with Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys when he was semi doing a solo thing.

    Really nice.

Class act and such a beautiful lady.

Watching the video again, I don't think Marilyn even plays guitar....left OR right handed. Watch just the opening intro and when she starts singing....her fretting hand doesn't change, even when chords do. Why they would feel like she had to play ( or fake playing) at all is odd. None of this detracts from her stunning voice.

She was doing behind-the-nut muting with her right hand while her strumming hand seemed to be keeping perfect rhythm. Bones Howe was conducting from the booth.

Robert Wagner was thinking, “Amazing that I get paid for this! I can buy a boat.”

Yeah, she did a MUCH better job of faking (at least her strumming hand) than the typical non-musician actor that's often shown "playing" an instrument. At least she IS a musician. It always bothers me when an actor can't find an hour to study with a real player to learn something.
Actually, the WORST are ignorant actors playing an ensemble conductor. They seem to think the director is just waving their arms around, willy-nilly, with no precise meaning.
