I saw MM on the Holy Wood tour in 2000

I went with a co-worker/biker/bass player buddy (RIP Rock) because he couldn't get anyone else to go with him and in his way of thinking, me going would pay him back for when he went with me to see Sparklehorse the year before (along with 10 other friends  )

Anyway, it was uh, a spectacle. The crowd was kinda cultish, tho no more cultish than Pearl Jam fans. The music was okay, the show was entertaining and at times cartoonish but fun.

My buddy had a good time and that's what really mattered...well that and also that my ear plugs worked

I actually like this cover of Sweet Dreams.

All that weirdness is just an act thats his gimmick. Without all the weirdness he probably wouldnt have made it in the music biz.

He shocked alot of people that actually believed what he was doing was real so he got alot of press and got popular real quick. Kids always like someone their parents hate.

Ive seen several interviews on Stern and MM isnt dumb he is very smart admitted its all an act and is laughing all the way to the bank.

How could anyone like him???? well thats a rather redundant question dont you think

Its called an opinion, everybody doesnt have to like what you like. PERIOD

Pretty cool concept huh.

for the books I dont like or listen to him, but can respect what he does. Sure its weird, but if nobody tried something different music would never have progressed.

Well, it's my opinion that I don't like his music.

I don't want to make the effort to find out whatever they've decided to present "what he's like".

And that is exactly why I could never buy what he was selling. Way too transparent and contrived for me.

Yawn.

I'm in the camp with the dig'ems, started listen to Manson in high school before the first album came out and have some stuff from a studio that a guy gave me that had the chance to be in studio for some real early recordings, The guy was telling me how much of a freak he was so I gave it a listen and the first thing I thought was this band is going all the way.
I stopped counting at 6 concerts and 4 or 5 of those were in small venues with about 125 people packed into a club that used to be a White Castle.................When it comes down to it Manson is just great fun and entertainment and what fun is it if you don't have variety, I go from Jerry Lee Louis, Cash, The Dead, Blues, Jazz, Rock, and whatever else I can fit in there... I dig the Chicken Pickers mentioned on here just as much.

Well, it's my opinion that I don't like his music.

What good is music if you can't have fun, and if you listen to it and hate it then you're not having fun so there is no reason to defend why you don't like something.

I haven't kept up with them over the past couple of years, but Mechanical Animals is a great CD. Marylin Manson is like Prince in that sometimes people get distracted by things like their choice of wardrobe, so that what talent they have, I feel often gets overlooked cause people are too busy paying attention to whatever it is they are wearing or something...

I always thought Cake and Sodomy should have been the break out song..

it was after Sweet Dreams that all the 13 and 14 year olds started polluting the pit at Manson shows, and seeing them walk around with goth clothes or dark rock style clothes they they bought from a chain store.

I like his music a lot. I would like to spend a day with that guy and find out if songs like 'The Beautiful People' came from personal experience.

In about '96 he came to Anchorage for a concert. There were people protesting and picketing the show and it was the talk of the town. He went on the local radio morning show (KWHL) and a bunch of people called in saying that nobody should go to this show because he was satanic, a bad influence on the kids etc.
I called in and said that nobody should go to the show because he sucks. He laughed and said that it was the only good reason anyone had given for not going to his show.
I still didn't go to the show, but gained a bit of respect for the guy for taking it all in stride and having a sense of humor about the whole thing.

His autobiography is outstanding, fan or not. The Long Cold Road Out of Hell or something like that.

I read the first page of that online at Amazon once. Man it was like something out of Silence of the Lambs...

Not sure if I could read it through, but I'd be interested to know how it turns out...

I really like the ending of the BMW film Beat the Devil (Clive Owen, James Brown) where Manson shows up at the end, ringing the door bell to the devils (Gary Oldman) apartment and the devil tells his assistant to make him go away. Because he's creeping him out.

Marilyn was a Rock Journalist I believe, like Bob Geldolf of
the Boomtown Rats.

Saw a void in the market and created his character. He is
highly intelligent and has exploited this niche and done
very well from it.

Alice Cooper was a musician first and foremost. The difference
is that Alice (Vince Furnier) can write killer commercial songs
and has done consistently for over 30 + years. He really did
invent the genre of Shock Rock. Alice also had the foresight
to employ Brilliant Guitar players, and Top Class Producers
(Bob Ezrin) as an example.

To me Marilyn is Alice without the songs. He has been
successful in what he set out to achieve and that must be
acknowledged, but for me, Alice was and still is the yard
stick by which shock rockers are to be judged. To have a
career stretching back to the late 60's and still going today
in such a limiting form of music is a credit to him and those
who have played with him.

Funny thread. I needed some comic relief. I don't like most of his music but I always enjoyed his interviews. It seems clear to me that the guy's selling more product than just his music. He's selling himself, packaged to appeal to an audience. I think this is something most artists do.

Face it. I don't like his "singing" and I'm not defending anything. I don't care if you care or not. :)
