Very sad.

Italian motorcyclist Marco Simoncelli has been tragically killed in a crash during today's Malaysian Moto GP, race organisers have confirmed.

The Gresini Honda rider lost control of his bike on the second lap of the circuit in Sepang and appeared to be hit by Colin Edwards and then Valentino Rossi as he slid across the track.

The fatal incident comes just a week after British IndyCar racing driver Dan Wheldon died after crashing in Las Vegas

Real sad - horrendous footage. Motogp has lost a great personality and a talented rider. RIP Marco.

very shocking indeed... I had been watching all the races through the afternoon...

it all happened so fast as the race had just started....

I was watching the world cup rugby on another screen... looked across.. caught the end of it.. then it was stopped... I had the sound low... first I thought rain brought them all in.. and the accidents were from storm water ...
it wasn't until a later replay that I saw it was a racing accident in the dry...
and that it was Simoncelli...

those guys are on the edge all the time it's a fine line.... never good when there's a fall let alone a fatality...geez... a very sad day for the sport...

Dear god ! Rest In Peace , Marco .
Much too young to die , man . I'm so shocked now , won't touch my bike today . Wanted to take a ride this afternoon . Don't feel like riding a bike at the moment .

Marco must have been already dead after hitting Collin Edwards bike with his body . He finally lost his helmet then . No man could survive such an devastating crash .

very sad, and not only for him : his parents surely used to watch him during races.
my heart breaks to think to his mum watching this scene on TV.

hope she have a lot of people to comfort her -as much as is possible i.e. not much-now.

his close friend and motorcycle-older-brother, Valentino Rossi, stepped upon him in that accident...how hard is life, sometimes.

a great embrace and support for al the people involved, and a prayer to Marco, died too young.

I am stunned. He was one to watch, and was always charging forward to the front. Not everyone liked his style, but no one could deny his spirit, and will to win! He will be greatly missed.

What you said, Tonemaster.

I was out with the family in the afternoon, and I came back to the telecast to see "race cancelled". The CEO of DORNA was talking one-on-one to the riders. Their body language told me enough. And when I didn't see his unruly mop, I knew he'd gone...

Vale Marco Simoncelli.

I have it recorded. Not sure I can watch now.

EDIT: I just checked - the replay I was recording was only Moto2 and 125 ... looks like out of respect they didn't replay the MotoGP race.

It seems wrong to say RIP Marco, because he was too young and talented and driven to rest. But RIP.

It's not supposed to be possible for his helmet to come off. Perhaps it didn't fit correctly, or was not fastened properly?

It's just gutwrenching. There's been a bunch of banter on some local bike forums, speculation on Edwards and rossi's futures too. A truly tragic loss.
I can't say this won't affect me potentially gridding up next season. The risks are big, the rewards, often small (at club level).
Rip simo.

Most probably the strap failed. The same thing happened (but with a happier ending) in 1983 when Wayne Gardner hit Franco Uncini at the Dutch TT (also on the 2nd lap) and tore his helmet off.

Gardner thought he'd killed Uncini. But thankfully, he was mistaken.
Franco Uncini retired from racing in 1985, but is the current MotoGP rider's representative. He made part of the statement in the official MotoGP press conference about Marco Simoncelli's death.

The brutal truth is, helmets aren't going to protect you from everything.
My heart goes out also to Colin Edwards and Valentino, who both had nowhere to go...
