Well, it is March. We will not reference current events. But I miss March Madness Basketball and I have something to maybe take us in a different direction.

A Contest! Woohooo! As some of you might have remembered up until last year I would always have a March Madness Challenge to guess the Champion in college basketball. I would always provide a musical prize. I gave away guitars, pedals, a banjo and a mandolin one year. Even a Tele type guitar once. I loved that contest and I miss it but events around here changed everything when the site was sold.

But now we are solid again. Things are good. We need a new contest. Don't need no stinkin' sports!

Short Story Contest. I will provide the rules, open to everyone, musical prize will be sent to one winner. Here we go! Any subject is allowed within the tdpri rules.

    2020 GUIDELINES:

    • Open March 14, 2020 to April 1, 2020
    • Short Fiction Prize submissions are open to all writers
    • International submissions are allowed
    • Short fiction only
    • Please submit work in English only
    • 2,000 word count maximum
    • Previously unpublished work only—we do NOT review reprints for contests
    • Allow one submission in context or a Word format as an attachment.
    • All entrants will receive a high five for their submission.
    • Please, please, double-space your submission and use Times New Roman 12 pt font for an attachment
    • Grammar, vernacular and punctuation will not be graded. Content and ability to portray a complete story will be. Thanks.
At the end I will provide a poll for the community to vote for the winner. Depending on the number of entrants I will post elimination polls. I will provide one prize.

    Have at it!

Too many rules (and just to be clear before someone reports this post, I meant in the contest).

I ran this contest right here on tdpri 8 years in a row without a problem. Fun contest. Too many rules? I'm not sure what is meant by this. And this a March Madness (by name only) contest it has nothing to do with present day events.

This has nothing to do with current events and I have run this contest at least 8 years in row right here on tdpri. Again this is a contest about writing a short story. It can be anything that follows tdpri rules. Make it fun for cripes sakes. WE need some fun.

Report yourself. As i have stated this is a fun contest as long as it follows forum rules. It has nothing to do with current events. Write a story or a poem. Indulge us please.

    Contest entry.

Late one night restless in sleep I had a dream with a meaning so deep.
Early one evening as the sun was sinking down, I set about on hwy 1 for the edge of town.
There in the mid-night I came upon an eerie scene. It was accompanied by a terrible howl and a scream.
There stood a man in a coat and a hat. Once dapper and fine but now worn as the guitar on his back.
The figure was pale and hollow as death. He opened his mouth as if to say something serious. But all that came out was a scream, strong and furious.
He held a bottle in his hand with no cap on its top. I could see it was empty, he'd drank every drop.
The pain in his soul and heart it would numb but the pain to his body was still yet to come.
An anger as deep and wide as the river, washed over his face like the floods it delivers.
All the whiskey in the world cannot heal a mans heart. The pain in his soul you cannot begin to know.
There is no sun on the horizon only blues and sorrow. There is only the dark cold night and no chance of tomorrow.
Mud on his pants and worn tattered shoes carried the signs of a traveling mans blues.
Moonlight on the river shining through the trees lit up the roads as the story unfolds.
A dog sick and in agony so real let loose a howl and the figure did scowl.
There in the ditch by the roadside in the mud, the two beings pain was unbound. As the mutt whimpered and whined a new figure appeared as if from the sound.
He had no shape or no form as a man could describe. His was a figure half dead yet alive.
The giver of gifts not easily achieved and the bringer of sorrows for those broken enough to receive these.
The former fell to his knees with a cry and a moan that came from deep sadness and alone.
He handed over the battered piece of wood to be smoothed and tuned for the good?
Not knowing the accord in his actions his soul only envisioned the fleeting attraction of temporary satisfaction.
A brief reprieve from the pain that dogged him through all his days would only bring destruction from the others wicked ways.
The latter payed no mind to the dog nor the dogged alike but tuned and picked a binding song as wrong as the river is long.
In accepting the tune the hollow man was bound in his fate. The dog expired foreboding his future and the man stood perhaps to reconsider his deal but it was too late as if the shape had never been real.
A newfound power emerged by the hour and he continued on traveling the riverside.

    Edited for spacing.

When I copied it into my Wordpad it spaced it automatically so I could read it fine. Thanks for the entry. If that's a start this is going to be great!
