Looks like the rec room in a minimum security prison, but still, SUCH a great story...

“Many a New Yorker has fantasized about kicking back with a cold beer in a prime piece of Manhattan real estate — especially one this close to good transportation,” MTA Inspector General Carolyn Pokorny said in a news release. “But few would have the chutzpah to commandeer a secret room beneath Grand Central Terminal.”

I guess that would be the non-executive lounge for the common man.
Looks like it only lacked plumbing.

This seems a very nice one, but i suspect the idea is pretty common. I used to do water treatment audits in factories. On one swing through a Michigan car plant I found two separate sleeping areas in one afternoon. From the floor one was just a piece of cardboard on a mezzanine 30 feet up. When i got up there to look at the heat exchanger the cardboard had a cot, a side table, a lamp and an alarm clock placed on top of them, but invisible from the floor. The other was nestled in a low point on top of the refractory brick insulation on a low-pressure boiler. Must have been warm in the winter.

Found one of these up in the attic of the administration building at the University of Illinois.

I was working as an admissions officer and we kept a lot of paperwork and records up in the attic. I was up there searching a box of some obscure form, a saw light coming from way back in the HVAC ducts.

I follow a maze-like path and eventually found a small table a three chairs. There was an ashtray, lamp, and a bit of garbage, but nothing too crazy. Would not have know it was there, if someone hadn't left the lamp on. It was really tucked away, never figured out who it belonged to.

A friend of mine is a retired engineer for Metro North. I took a ride with him once on his daily run from New Haven to Grand Central. You wouldn’t believe the things you see when you’re in the front of that train all the way through to the end. It’s almost Harry Potteresque.

Well, what else are you going to do while pulling down that overtime? Work? A man needs his mancave. Too bad there wasn't a tele and a practice amp in there.

    Break room follies

Would have loved to have seen what they would have done with the place if it had not been discovered for a couple of more years.

This is actually nothing new for NYC - I am surprised that they are making such a big deal out of it. When I was living in NYC in the 80's, I took a day job on a lark to be a city HS teacher. It turned out that a starting garbage man w/o a HS diploma was making more than a starting HS teacher!

On top of that we later learned that Garbage collectors union was padding their membership by creating no show jobs where guys would report to a larger version of said "man cave" and sit around all day watching TV and playing cards. I aint talkin bout 2 or tree mutts neider! Dozens of jokers on the lamb while I was being tortured by school kids.

I used to work on a maintenance crew at a really big insurance company office building. We had all sorts of little hideout places like that

When I was 18, I worked as a United Auto Worker for over a year before heading to college fabricating bulldozers and building tractor cabs (ROPS) for a large, well-known implement builder. We had a manual (not automated) assembly line for the ROPS, and the huge dude who loaded them on to the start was a guy we called "Mongo". He had worked there forever, and had gotten the welders and others to build him this huge, air-conditioned metal box with a dorm fridge and small TV that he would sit in while waiting for the line to move. No one ever questioned him.
