I took my girlfriend's Strat to Crow River Guitar and Sound today for a set-up and while I was there I saw this cool Magnatone amp.Know anything about these?

Very cool amps. I don't know many specifics. I have a friend that owns several. That model looks familiar. Magnatone had a cool pitch-shifting tremolo, Lonnie Mack famously used.

    Love me some Maggie's!

I had one years ago that I had to let go of... Wish I could have kept it.

These days they tend to be prohibitively expensive... Full of unobtainium, and all that.

I tried one the other day (their smallest… Varsity). A strat sounded good through it and it oozed “high end”, from the leather handle to all the rest. They ARE very pricey though!

I had one that's very similar, a late 50's 260A. A piece of gear I should have kept but I wasn't sophisticated enough to keep it at the time and getting some $ into the house was muy importante.

The have a woody tone. The tremolo is to die for. Cranked up to 10 is a great tube crunch.
Cool amps that fetch a pretty penny.

I sold mine before Magnatone inflation hit (but I got it for nothing too).

    Good site https://www.magnatoneamps.com/history.html

I sold my 260A (w/outspeakers) to a guy on a Yahoo groups Magnatone forum in 2006(?) Those guys were deep in amp knowledge.

EDIT: just thought of this....When I was trying to learn about mine, 1990s, pre -internet and in Milwaukee, I found a few around the city and asked questions. They were no big deal, cost a couple hundred bucks in great shape and had primarily been used as accordian amplifiers. Being in Milwaukee area, and the polka music in the area, it wasn't surprising to see them in music shops.

I believe the one in the OP is a vintage one. Don't know anything about the new reissues.

Because I don't perform or anymore, I'm in the process of paring down my equipment. I'm unloading several guitars, a 64 Strat among them, and two near mint 67 blackface amps...

I'll keep two guitars and one amp. Well "keep" isn't exactly accurate...I'll have to acquire the amp that will replace the two I sell.

It will be either the Magnatone Panoramic Stereo or the Magnatone Twilighter Stereo.

    Decisions decisions.

These amps look really nice, and probably sound even better! It's a shame I haven't found one in a store to try out yet!

Here are some pieces pasted together. Recorded with a Sony PCM-M10 (only recording device I have).
I used the built-in microphones, so please ignore the background noise (it's just the missus clicking the mouse ).

Damn, that is a mighty sound! It basically sounds just like I imagined it would... I will definitely have to look out for a deal on one of these! Thank you for taking the time to do a recording!

I had one of those back in the 70's. I bought it from an accordian player who lived down the street. Nice warm tones, i used to stack it on a 2x12 cab, and run it at 10 thru the four 12's. Very nice with my tele custom. Alas, the one that got away, didn't know what I had, and traded it on an ampeg V4.

I would like to come across one of these. I don’t see many Magnatone...none so far...out in my area. I looked at the schematic. This is a mono amp despite that stereo input. That stereo input is actually just a ‘bridging’ input that provides the input signal to both channels. The output is mono. The Md. 480 is a true stereo output amp.

Here you can hear it in a 'live' setting and 'not so clean'.
