I always thought, that the Pilot "Magic" song was sung by a singer/band that really did not speak English ( at least as 1st language), as their native tongue- might be European?
Just the pronunciation...

But really no idea, just a guess.

There were a few years in the mid-70s where that sound was popular. Another band that sounded like Pilot was Sweet.

Ian Bairnson who played the guitar in Pilot went on to play the guitar solo in Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights".
He also played on quite a few of her albums, as well as live sessions with Joe Cocker and Sting.
