I encountered the name "Abcde". I thought it was a typographical error.
It's not. It's pronounced "Abesity" (think "Obesity" with an "A"). The name was given to a male child.
Easy to learn to spell it, but it just struck me as dumb.

a man or a woman is given a name when he or she is born. Maybe it is a name that strikes fear in their enemies as they grow up. Maybe it is a nice, comfortable name. Maybe it is a name that others ridicule. Maybe it is a name that causes the named one to feel outcast. Imagine if your name was transcribed "Jame" instead of "James" on your birth certificate.

well I new a long island hippy princess the Changed her name to Buckwheat Groats, it's true.
Her friend who was a much sharper knife was calling herself baby grand (and the 88 keys), no really it's true. I knew a guy that changed his name to Pink Cloud , his real name was Ron , Ron Johnson or something ,this was in 1968. my late spouce nicknamed me Cocamamie Louis or Mr Piggie or just Pig, I never really answered to any of them , my friends called her Jody Pie, Ms Pie, or Pi I never knew which?
Naming a kid is a daunting task, Chastity? not nice. Tanky Raper is the name of a real child that crossed the desk of a social worker her brothers name was ... get this ... Rocky as in Rocky Raper. long before Stallone made Rocky big time cultural norm.
Would it be rude , yeah it would be. Never mind.

He was what made so many bands become a 'scene'... he would bring his dancers to the clubs where the Byrds were playing and make it into a 'happening'... he had a son that died under suspicious circumstances IIRC... fell through a skylight on the roof when he was like 5 and Vito left the kid in the hospital to go to a happening....

There were people at the college I "attended" who didn't know my name was not Otis Fudpucker. I've googled the surname and found it, but I don't think any of the people to whom it is attached were born with the name, and I think my adoption of it predates theirs, though I can't prove that.

A generalisation but perhaps someone called Ludovic or Torquil is unlikely to be working the checkout at Walmart and Tyson or Laycee-Mae won't be defending clients in a corporate fraud case. There are always exceptions of course.
My employment history includes packing newspapers, premise security, vegetable picker, stacking shelves, cleaning toilets and shifting freight as well as aircraft engineering so I'm no demeaning snob. You may call me Estéfañó.

Even if your name has been around for 11 centuries, it is still made up, some way or another.

When I had clients with these kinds of names, the people came up from nothing, often did not really know how to read or write. They may have had a neighbor or friend help them with the spelling of the name.

If they're all right people (and so many of them are) I just don't mind.

I work in a school and there seems to be a trend for quite a few of the younger kids to have biblical names. Elijah, Noah, Joshua, Amos, etc.

Nice old names but unusual in these secular times. Probably better than Mercedes or Chardonnay though, which we also have.

I think it's part of american culture. (A Guy is named Metta World Peace legally which is crazy).

Napoleon took a law here in early XIXth century where name had to be taken in Christian calendar.

Also the law fell down by application and then by Law evolution, we're quite strict in the "made il" name here.

Even though I already met a girl which had my first name while it's an arabic male one because her parents misunderstood it with a composite french féminine name.

All names are made up. It's just a matter of who made it up, when, and how many times it's been used since then.

Personally, I think it's a little insane that with all the names available, something like 1/3 of all males born in the US the same year as I was were also named Michael. Way to think outside the box, folks. Almost as bad as George Foreman naming five sons George, but on a national level.

My wife is a labor and delivery nurse. A few years someone named their son "JKMNO." (Noel - no "L".)

And I went to school with a Russ "Rusty" Bolt.

Aviation pioneer Bill Lear named his daughter "Shanda."
