The rhyming through the entire song is off. It's not the only song ever written that could have used a better rhyming dictionary :)

As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company///

///As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti

Not only is the rhyming awkward, the second line has too many words in it and comparing a mountain to another mountain isn't simile it's tautology.

    A hat trick!

What's an 'English' saying? Leaving cake out in the rain?

65 years and I've never heard it.

    "Longing for some solitary company"

'Solitary' and 'company' are two completely different things. It's an impossible concept--such as dry water.

...until all you're left with is stinky hands and lots of tears.

"Tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more"- Ten Years After

Obviously, if you tax people to give others a free ride, when the "rich" are taxed into oblivion, the free ride will be over.

If lyrics were supposed to function as poetry then there wouldn’t be music propping them up.

Most of them. I like alot more songs if I don't listen to the words carefully.

I just read the lyrics to the whole song, and I know what it's getting at, and it's actually not a bad sentiment, since by now we've all spent way too much time in clubs rockin' out with people such as our own bad selves seriously past our prime, but I can't handle....

I still find it kinda creepy.

Speaking of the Kinks, I guess this always kinda bothered me:

I'm not content to be with you in the DAY time,
Girl I want to be with you all of THUH time.

It should rhyme. The "thuh" doesn't work for me.

Would it help if you knew that it's a Leadbelly song?

Steely Dan's lyrics are sly and brilliant, and are more narrative than most, I suggest you listen to Kid Charlemagne over and over until you get it :)

The joke is in real life there wasn't gas in the car, Owsley ran out of gas while they were trying to flee.

How do you pronounce 'the', and have you ever visited the UK?

I saw Sawyer Brown a couple of years ago. Introducing “After All These Years,” lead singer Mark Miller remarked rather ruefully that it was a shame that a sad song about infidelity was the group’s biggest hit. I guess “Betty’s Being Bad” and “Bubba Shot the Jukebox” are funny heartbreak songs.
