I'm still drinking gin when I can buy it
I sure bought a lot of it today
I still never win but I'd love to try it
I'd still take you back if you would stay

Haunting lyrics from Zane Williams “Jayton and Jill”...

“What Jayton didn’t tell her about that night was how he’d taken his dad’s ol’ .45.

He’d been driving ‘round thinking how nobody ‘d miss him if he just ended it all.”

The line “Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you” from Simon and Garfunkel’s Old Friends/Bookends really resonated with me.
I was given the 45 RPM single of Mrs. Robinson/Old Friends-Bookends for my 11th birthday.
Bobby Kennedy was shot on my 11th birthday.
The tragic event seared/sealed the lyric in my memory.
I still remember, 52 years later.

"don't let the sound of you own wheels drive you crazy"
"and will somebody tell me what price , that you have to pay to get out of going through all of these things twice."
" why does touching tongues make life so confusing"

Turn your back on weeds you've hoed
    Silly sinful seeds you've sowed
Add your straw to the camel's load
Pray like hell when your world explode
    Little wheel spin and spin
Big wheel turn around and around
    Little wheel spin and spin
Big wheel turn around and around

    From the immortal A Horse With No Name by America;
In the desert, you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain

I can't recall any time when I've had so much pain inflicted upon me that
I forgot my name. Maybe I've just been lucky.
It's just a song... and a bad rhyme of name/pain.

    Oh Common Ground,
Is Common Ground a word or just a sound?
    Common Ground,
Remember those civil rights workers buried in the ground.

Well all the friends that you knew in school
They used to be so cool now they just bore you
Well look at them now, already pulling the plow
So quick to take to grain like some old mule

For me a whole song, 'the sun comes up its Tuesday morning' by the Cowboy junkies, heard it a short while after a very painful divorce and it summed it up entirely

The path you tread is narrow
And the drop is shear and very high
    The ravens all are watching
    From a vantage point nearby
    Apprehension creeping
Like a tube-train up your spine
Will the tightrope reach the end
    Will the final couplet rhyme

    And it's high time
    Cymbaline
    It's high time
    Cymbaline
    Please wake me

I did my time in that rodeo
It's been so long and I've got nothing to show
    Well I'm so plain loco
Fool that I am I'd do it all over again

    Little Feat - Mercenary Territory

    -----------------------------------------

Vietnam Vet with a cardboard sign
Sitting there by the left turn line
Flag on the wheelchair flapping in the breeze
One leg missing, both hands free
No one's paying much mind to him
The V.A. budget's stretched so thin
And there's more comin' home from the Mideast war
We can't make it here anymore

James McMurtry - We Can't Make It Here

    ----------------------------------------------

I'm going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Though true love could have been a contender
    Are you there?
Say a prayer for the Pretender
Who started out so young and strong
    Only to surrender

    Jackson Browne - The Pretender
