Pretty sure Van Zant and Ozzy attended the same School for Singers. They just sort of shuffle around the stage.

FWIW, the two "technically superior guitarists" of the early Lyn Sky era were Ed King and Steve Gaines, IMO and in the opinions of many others.

I have a cousin who hung out at a hotel with RVZant and the boys before the Steve Gaines period. He and his guitar-playing buddies played guitars in the hotel rooms with the LS guitarists, trading licks, and partying... they agreed that Ed King was outstanding while AC and GR were just very good!

In '77 a good guitarist/friend and I were up front immediately in front of Steve Gaines during one of their last concerts and Gaines was simply amazing; at that time, SG was next to Billy Powell on stage (Stage Right). Both of us agreed as did many others that Gaines was a great addition and suspected that, had LS continued on, Gaines would have emerged as a solo act as he was that talented!

I don't like the "who's better" when it comes to art. That being said, Al Dimeola is technically superior to, say, Robben Ford, IMO... but I LIKE Robben's playing better than Al's. That's not a knock on either AD or RF; is just a personal preference.

RIP all of the old Skynyrd boys (except - I think Artemis Pyle is still alive?).

Isn’t that Ed King on the Strat? Whomever, I liked his solo best.
Ed King was on studio original, and here Steve Gaines is doing a great take here, playing Ed's solo

* BTW, loved it when Gary and Allen would play these great melodic solo lines, in (almost ) unison.

They did the same on "I Need You" ( love this song, and in other sings.

So powerful- that 'double drive' they created)

Yup. AP's still rockin' with his own band in North Cackalacky.

One of my all time favorites. That lead break in the original recording was spectacularly powerful. Or maybe it was powerfully spectacular? Anyway, I love the song!

In my opinion Billy Powell and Steve Gaines were the best technical musicians in the band, followed closely by Ed King.
