I was perusing some pics on the TDPRI. Mildwild had posted a pic of the late Luther Allison. Chicago bluesman supreme, Luther Allison had some fiery chops. He died at age 57 and was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. If you have never heard of him check him out.

I had the pleasure of playing with him and his band, during a one week residency I did as his opening act back in 1979-1980. This was before he went to France to live. He drank a full bottle of Chivas Regal every night, and played great. His band was tremendous, and all great guys. Luther was a larger than life character back then. We had one heck of a week.

I got to catch him live, once, at Seattle's Bumbershoot Arts Fest, back in the early '9O's. One of the greatest live performers I've ever seen & an artist deserving greater fame...man, did he bring the fire!

I discovered Luther Allison on youtube. He's one of those guys that sounds great and is great, but doesn't have a ton of output to listen to forever.

I have performed at Luther Allison's House of Blues, here in Madison.

That was a nice venue, back in the day, but I never cared for the brick wall behind the stage; it did not help the sound one bit.

That problem contributed to my passing on a chance to see Link Wray there. I've kicked myself ever since

First heard him in my high school daze ('79)--classmate had all of his brother's records in plastic milk crates stacked up nicely across from his Marantz home stereo/quad set-up.
It was very enlightening, to say the least.

Funny timing, I've just been going through a patch of listening to Luther Allison myself and marvelling at his excellence!

Saw his son Bernard live twice in France... killer player, great sound and very close to the public. I remember him using a wireless system and walking among the crowd while playing.

My absolute favourite blues guitarist. He was equally adept at the "less is more" style of playing or really banging it out full on. Unfortunately I never got see him live but have a lot of his albums on CD

definitely one of the greats and someone that is easily forgotten or overlooked. I learned about him through pandora a few years back, been a fan ever since. That album Bad news is Coming is a killer....

First saw him when I was in college, probably '71 or '72. Remarkable. Had seen Freddie King a couple of years earlier and those two gave me a lifelong interest in electric blues.

Luther was absolutely incredible. Even at the end of his life he was playing 3 hour long sets, straight through, never letting up. Agree he was larger than life. I got to meet him briefly in Milwaukee, as my friend/mentor Willie Higgins had played in Luther's band. He was very nice to me, big smile. It was before his gig though and you could tell he was fired up to hit the stage. He was a living link to the older late 40's/early 50's Blues artists from Chicago and the more modern way of playing, and he knew it all.

Do you remember what years Willie Higgins played with Luther?
