I just thought of a benefit of using 1:

All of the carve templates in 1 extend over the pickups and neck pocket, so you can screw them each down. With #2, the small ones might have to be taped.

It is also easier to align the larger templates in #1. I used #2, but I now think if I do them again I might try #1.

Lmk when you are thinking about how to do the neck plane. Theres a great technique with a hand plane that gives perfect results and sets up a perfect break angle for the neck pocket

Ok, we’re ready.
Moldy, I doubt this is a new insight to you, but I describe the method here (scroll down to post #48):

Thanks. Now that you’ve reminded me, I remember seeing it when you originally posted it. It seems really straightforward, much better than the box method.

In the movie he does the neck and pickup angles with a router on a little angled box, you can see it at about 9:40. As I recall he says the neck angle is 4 degrees, the pickup one or a little more. He just shaves the area between the ends of the contours off with the router.

I hadn't seen the movie and didn't know about the contours but I did have the SM plans with cross sections so I started by routing a level equivalent to the top of the binding or the top of the recurve (I jury rigged my router table to do this, it wasn't very pretty. I then just shaped the top with planes and chisels and scrapers

Then I started making the neck and set the angle of the heel at 4.4 degrees per my plans

and shaved that off with a little plane

The 4.4 degree taper starts at the top of the binding and as he says in the movie, ends slightly beyond the end of the fretboard where the pickup angle starts.

Somehow I managed to get it all to work, the top arch looks pretty good, I've got nice recurves including that area at the waist, the neck sits nicely on the top and the geometry is perfect. The movie method is better, but mine worked.

This may help, I did the CAD model frpm a 1959 print, for a physical CAM master in acrylic. The other top plate is 24k gold plate over billet Aluminum with a final PVD coating which needs to be completed with a bottom wood piece.. Hollow and chambered inside. Any volunteers?
The top curve is a cycloid (math stuff)
