Recently Ive been obssessed with Julian Lage and his tele tone. I'm running a MIM tele into a very slightly driven Blues Junior with an attenuator (volume 5, master 4). But with my amp and a boss bd2, I just cant quite achieve Julian's almost fuzzy small tweed amp cranked compression sound that is extremely dynamic and very expressive when you dig in. I currently have the Walrus Audio Messner in mind after seeing Reverb's demo of it on Youtube. What are some other choices? Thanks a bunch in advance!

Catalinbread Formula 55 has a big range of low gain sounds in it. Voiced pretty dark.

Might look at some of the Lovepedal offerings too - there's a Champ pedal (among others).

I did go through this same pursuit last year by the way and you describe what I was looking for quite well.

One thing I found useful was using the bridge pickup with the tone rolled off a ways. That may get you close with your current set up. Another surprisingly easy way to get in the ballpark was using a 57 Deluxe model on the Fender Mustang (that I tweaked to my liking).

The ZenDrive gets that cool Robben Ford like jazzy/bluesy edge-of-breakup tone.

I made this after I got the F55. It's just a few low gain sounds from music I was working on at the time. Not really Lage'ish, but maybe it'll be of some use to you.

There is also a demo of it using a looper online. It's long and boring, but useful if you're interested.

I like the warm, woody tone that you get from a Dumble style OD for jazz. It's a very 'polite' sort of overdrive and sits in the jazz mix well, IMO.

    ^^^Yup, that's why I recommended the ZenDrive which is a "Dumble-in-a-box" pedal.

Zendrive is a good shout, but from memory, it isnt exactly what im looking for. However much I love Larry Carlton and Robben Ford, under the current circumstances, Im seeking after Julian Lage's tele jazz tone. Watch his trio live at the blue whale performing I'll Be Seeing You and you will understand :)

I'd still recommend a d style pedal (or amp) for that sound. That sounds a lot like my ODS with the PAB engaged (tonestack bypass-gives midrangy flat EQ with a gain boost)
The sound is 'almost' clean. Very small amount of clipping. You'll probably find even with a 'Low gain' pedal you're going to need to set the gain/drive below 9:00 for that type of sound.
Also, remember that the D style tone is a lot wider than just Larry Carlton and Robben Ford's type sounds.

What's Julian use? Sounds like he may not be using pedals, and is getting that mostly from the amp, but I could be wrong.

he uses an old tweed champ without pedals, so the catalinbread formula 55 suggested above seems good

Friend of mine has a J. Rockett "Blue Note" and is very satisfied with it:

Also, J. Rockett makes, "The Dude" pedal which is another Dumble in a box.

I was going to say a blues driver, but I’m wondering if a soul food or even a lpb-1 boost might do it for you?

Else EMG pickup retrofit indicated for warm jazz understatement.
