Can anyone recommend some amps streeting for $500 or less with plywood baffles and/or cabinets (as opposed to MDF)?

I don't think you're going to find much real wood in many of the low end amps--that was the first thing to go back in the '80's when people thought particle board sounded more even than solid wood or even plywood. I have a Peavey Studio Pro I got as a chassis and built a pine cabinet with plywood baffle for--that may be one way to go if you don't mind doing the cabinet.

The Blackheart range advertise birch ply cabs. Great little amps for the money

Early Vox AC15CC1s were Birch ply. I don't know when they switched though. Mine is number 0000518 and it is birch (at least that's what I'm told by the experts).

Oh, and ALL of the AC30CCs were birch and, who knows...you might be able to pick up a used AC30CC1 or even a CC2 for 500 now that the new line has come in.

my old traynor ycv-40 is plywood cab. I know this because it was ejected from my jeep when I was rear-ended by a drunk driver. The resulting road rash showed plywood behind the tolex. By the way I retubed it and have gigged it for three years since trouble free.

Besides SF Champs and Vibro Champs to be had for 500 or less all day, the recent model Gibson GA-5 has a rock solid ply cab . . .
