Oddly enough, FIL's poetry is very much literal and narrative reportage, almost as if powerless to comment or judge.

Maybe the TH SMS is a hair shirt sort of self admonishment?

He idealizes Thomas Merton, whose words I'm also a fan of at times.

Byrne was the lyricist, but due to some interviews I think the music was more a joint venture of all.
I'm afraid that Byrne not only is a giant talent, but also a giant egomaniac.
But still - a great band and I wish I could have seen them live!

Byrne still tours and does TH songs without the old band, just as well as with the original lineup I might add.

I actually saw him/ them in Berlin in maybe 2009.
    Stupendous show.

I think of an egomaniac as one who regards themselves as far greater than the really are.
DB might be reasonably spot on with his impression of himself.
Never hung out with him though...

That one is about trying to break writer's block. 25 or 6 to 4 refers to the time.

What time is it? 25 or 6 to 4 (am).

That's from an interview I read of the songwriter. Lam maybe? I don't remember the name but I remember the story.

There was an English teacher at my high school who thought "Tails of Brave Ulysses" by Cream was quite good poetry. I think she liked "White Room" as well.

I heard "America" on an interview show on NPR. There really are reptiles known as "Alligator Lizards."

I think a lot of songs from the psychedelic era were more attempts at surrealistic poetry then lazy song writing (some more successful then others). But then again I always liked "MacArthur Park" for it's weird lyrics and over dramatic reading by Richard Harris. BTW, Didn't Waylon Jennings record that too?

I know that. But without the back story do you have any idea what it is about?

From an interview with Dewey Bunnel:

Interesting back story to the song, I must admit.

    Step 1: Contains a hammer.
Step Cheeseburger: Lit Pit Git Nit and a
Half-step on the sidewalk which runs past 9:00 Berlin.
This means nothing, and That means everything else. Door-hinge.

I considered myself a Dadaist around the tender age of 16 when I first learned of it. I gave it up shortly after when I figured out it wouldn't immediately get me in the tender graces of the women-folk and I took up guitar instead. That didn't work either, but I found I liked it better...

P.S. The last word in that er... "poem" rhymes with orange. Sue me.

Unchained, Van Halen. That song makes no sense at all.
