I had to look up the lyrics to understand them, but later found that l like the 'Misheard Lyrics' version better.

I've never heard that before. I'll have to give it another listen. BTW, the Dead gave away the royalties for that song as they thought it was too close to Libba Cotton's song "Shake Sugaree." She said, "Every once in a while I gets me a check from some dead guys in California."

Maybe the popularity of Country music has to do with the fact that a pickup truck is just a pickup truck.

I don't think the Sugaree narrative is literally in the lyrics, so much as alluded to( maybe by Hunter/Garcia/ Cotten?) in the song:
. ' When they come to take you down, when they bring that wagon 'round' ( slave capture?) I'll meet you at the Jubilee.." ( a gathering or party, maybe even clandestine, of slaves? )

It was our fill-in drummer ( very good, can play anything) who hipped me to song background...
He ( not being as familiar with GD music as me and fellow bandmates) was learning "Sugaree" and how to play drums on it ( not really much going on there, just good R&B groove) - I guess he Googled, got song clip and also info on song- I do forget details... Sorry!

BTW, my band played a regular bar gig tonight, and there happened to be a Birthday party going on-

The manager ( knowing us) told us the Birthday couple "likes the Grateful Dead"
So we got right to it:
Bertha and Sugaree, song 1, song 2!
Love it when the music folks want to hear, lines up with what you like most to play!
We don't to a ton, but 5-6 fun Dead tunes

Oh Ronnie, we hardly knew ye. My favorite is from 'Holy Diver':

    "Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he's clean
Oh don't you see what I mean"

Umm... nope Ronnie, I don't believe I do...

I absolutely loved that album. My favorite was 'Birdhouse In Your Soul'. I suspect it was about a night light, but dissecting the lyrics went so much deeper...

I read an interview with the band ages ago, and basically the lyrics aren't supposed to make sense. How Curt would write is he would sort of mumble and yowl while they were working out the basic song structure, then he'd go back and decipher whatever it sort of sounded like later. The fact that it STILL sounded like mumble and yowl was sort of coincidental... (jus kiddink... I loved Nirvana back in the day).

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Syd Barrett:

    "Lime and limpid green
    A second scene
A fight between the blue you once knew
    Floating down, the sound resounds
    Around the icy waters underground
Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania
    Neptune, Titan
    Stars can frighten"

    Or Duran Duran:

"The reflex is an only child who's waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn't that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does
Leaves you answered with a question mark"

Umm... yes, that's quite bizarre, Mr. Le Bon...

Spill the Wine- Eric Burdon and War

I was once out strolling one very hot summer's day
When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest
In a big field of tall grass
I laid there in the sun and felt it caressing my face
As I fell asleep and dreamed
I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
And that I was the star of the movie
    This really blew my mind
The fact that me an overfed long haired leaping gnome
Should be the star of a Hollywood movie, hmmm
    But there I was
Hmm, I was taken to a place
The hall of the mountain kings
I stood high by the mountain tops
    Naked to the world
    In front of
    Every kind of girl
There was long one's, tall ones, short ones, brown ones
Black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones
Out of the middle, came a lady
    She whispered in my ear
    Something crazy
    She said,

Spill the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, take that pearl
Spill the wine, take that pearl

I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back
As she disappeared, but soon she returned
In her hand was a bottle of wine
    In the other a glass
She poured some of the wine from the bottle into the glass
And raised it to her lips
And just before she drank it, she said

Take the wine dig that girl
Spill the wine, dig that girl
Spill the wine, dig that girl, come on, come on
Spill the wine, dig that girl
    Take that girl, yeah
It's on girl, all you gotta do is spill that wine
Spill that wine, let me feel, let me feel hot, yeah, yeah, ooh
Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine
Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine
    Dig that girl

    white room The Cream

In the white room with black curtains near the station
Black roof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment

I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves

You said no strings could secure you at the station
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows
I walked into such a sad time at the station
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning

I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves

At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes
She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings

    I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd;
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves

what condition my condition was in First Edition ( Kenny Rodgers)

I woke up this morning with the sundown shining in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within
I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in
I watched myself crawling out as I was a-crawling in
I got up so tight I couldn't unwind
I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in

Someone painted April Fool in big black letters on a Dead End sign
I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind
Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

I said I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

Let it all hang out The Hombres

(spoken): "A preachment, dear friends, you are about to receive
On John Barleycorn, nicotine, and the temptations of Eve"
    (Bronx cheer)

No parkin' by the sewer sign
    Hot dog, my razor's broke
    Water drippin' up the spout
But I don't care, let it all hang out

Hangin' from a pine tree by my knees
Sun is shinin' through the shade
Nobody knows what it's all about
It's too much, man, let it all hang out

Saw a man walkin' upside down
    My T.V.'s on the blink
Made Galileo look like a Boy Scout
Sorry 'bout that, let it all hang out

Sleep all day, drive all night
Brain my numb, can't stop now
    For sure ain't no doubt
Keep an open mind, let it all hang out

It's rainin' inside a big brown moon
How does that mess you baby up, leg
Eatin' a Reuben sandwich with sauerkraut
Don't stop now, baby, let it all hang out

Ministry's Jesus Built My Hotrod is probably only lovable to me and six others but the story behind the lyrics is worth telling:

Psalm 2: Al Jourgensen and Gibby Haynes' Build a "Hotrod"
One day when the Butthole Surfers were in Chicago — where Ministry were working on the record — Jourgensen invited frontman Gibby Haynes to come to Wax Trax Studios to collaborate.

"Gibby came in absolutely s***faced," Jourgensen says. "He couldn't even walk. We set him up with a stool, gave him a microphone and a fifth of Jack and played this thrashy, redneck rock track we were f***ing around with. Gibby babbled this incoherent nonsense, knocked over the whiskey and fell off the stool. We propped him back up again and tried again. 'Bing, bang, dingy, dong, wah, wah, ling, a bong!' He slurred s*** like that for a while then — crash! — back on the floor. We went on like that for take after take and got nothing but gibberish with a few discernible words, like 'baby,' 'gun,' 'trailer park,' 'around' and 'why, why, why!' Finally, Gibby passed out and it was up to me to turn all that babbling into a track.

    Anyway, here it is!

I was thinking about Whiter Shade of Pale and White Room too...

    Beat me to it!

Love the Cocteau Twins too... I think they're still ahead of our time.

Lotsa' cryptic Tom Waits tunes... Waltzing Matilda, Walking Spanish, etc.

Lyle Lovett has a few doozies too, eg, If I Had a Boat, Which Way Does That Old Pony Run...

    MacArthur Park -

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
    It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed
    In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
