Likely a reference to freedom of self expression, which was the holy grail being sought out at the time.
Kodachrome was and still is an epic emulsion, which exaggerated visuals as if perhaps one was on drugs...

Yeah, Yes takes some liberties, but my sense is that each bit related to a feeling in early romance/ social struggle, and/or connected to a place where significant change happened for the songwriter, which they felt was usable in lyrical wordplay.
I can picture most of the feelings of being a teen with girls by the water, first car driving and free, looking up from the new experience of romantic contact and seeing the sky as this epic knockout.

Almost every Red Hot Chili Peppers song has totally senseless lyrics.

Until I met a young Kentucky girl in a pushup bra and fell all over myself, landing at the altar.

The pushup bra is a wonderful invention that you know is just not real, but you don't care, and you like it!

    Sly and the Family's Stoned

"Looking at the Devil, grinning at his gun
Fingers start shaking, I begin to run
Bullets start chasing, I begin to stop
We begin to wrestle, I was on the top

I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin
I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin

Step off'n the collar, slugged me in the face
Chit chat chatter trying, shoved me in the place
Thank you for the party but I could never stay
Many things are on my mind, the way

I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin
I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin

Dance to the music all night long
Everyday people sing their simple song
Mama's so happy, Mama starts to cry
Papa's still singing, you can make it if you try

I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin
I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin

I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin
I want to thank you falettinme be mice elf agin

Along the same lines, though a little before my time..."Mairzy Doats"

"Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you?
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey

A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you?
If the words sound queer and funny to your ear,
A little bit jumbled and jivey.
Say, "Mares eat oats and does eat oats

    and little lambs eat ivy."
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you?
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey

    A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn't you? "

No offense at all! I can't explain why but Bob Dylan fascinates me-

Funny ( as this is the ' other side' of his music), but I got really into Bob's guitar playing ( particularly from his early albums, where he is solo guitar or piano) teaching myself his original guitar parts ( keys/capo placement, tuning) just for kicks
    - I did not learn lyrics, but did print out lyrics just in case needed to perform.
Our band does play " Like a Rolling Stone," often the closer on a gig

"Nobody ever asked me the meaning of this song. People seem to know exactly what I'm talking about. It's good that a few things in this world are clear to all of us." - Robert Hunter

Neil Young's "Powderfinger". One of my favorite songs but I don't really know what it's about. It paints vivid pictures and tells a story but I'm not sure what the story is. Lots of theories on the old interwebs!

I'm not so sure Neil knew either. It seems like one of those songs where an idea took hold and he ran with it. I've written songs like that.

Loveable? I don’t know. For me, we can start with...

    Shotgun by Junior Walker
(I’m on my phone and fumbled the spelling of shotgun, the first time. It was great.)

    Mother Popcorn by James Brown

Oh, right, that was last weeks topic.

I can't tell you how many people back in the day thought it was "In the Garden of Eden".

Really? It's about backwoods moonshiners and the high price they pay to make a living (or sustain a way of life, depending on how you want to look at it.). Its a story told from the point of view of a bit player, a supporting cast member. Dad left me here to do all the thinkin'. That one was actually pretty clear to me. But I have to admit, I've never heard the Neil Young version. I'm familiar with the Cowboy Junkies version so maybe it loses something in the delivery with him.

I was actually going to say "Frank Mills," an old Lemonheads song (or maybe its a cover). Its loveable and funny and and the attributes she hangs on the subject are random but not necessarily confusing. Its a girl with daddy issues who is in love ... again.

I need to think on this topic for a bit. "Loveable" + "nonsensical." Hmm.

Wait, I've got it. Every song ever made by They Might Be Giants. Especially "Dead."

I returned a bag of groceries
    Accidentally taken off the shelf
    Before the expiration date
I came back as a bag of groceries
    Accidentally taken off the shelf
Before the date stamped on myself

Did a large procession wave their (Did a)
Torches as my head fell in the basket, (large pro-)
And was everybody dancing on the casket? (cession dance?)

Now it's over I'm dead and I haven't done anything that I want (now it's over)
Or, I'm still alive and there's nothing I want to do

Just reading the lyrics gave me an ear worm. Ugh.

LOL. I thought they were saying "I want to thank you for letting me be myself again." Is this really the lyric?
