    Hiya.

So, some reference to men vs women singing love songs over in the Taylor Swift thread, along with the question of whether or not love songs are inherently vapid, reminded me of this.

Probably not to the taste of some (shades too of what is good singing, playing, from the same Taylor Swift thread).

But, off the top of my head, I can't think of a better example of a real, truthful, plainspoken love song.

Plus, it's music I dig, music from a time before 'alternative' was a genre...

    Are love songs inherently vapid?

No. Most are, but they don't have to be.

I know some think this one is sappy but it never ceases to amaze me when I watch Bobby Hatfield belt this one out.

    "When I'm 64" - seems realistic to me. BTW I'm 64.

    I like these two:

Tom Petty has more than a few good ones, too, from different angles of love.

I think this one counts as "not stupid" because of the self-awareness factor alone...

I think this is the song that brought Lucinda Williams to tears when she was dragged along to see Paul Kelly play

Seems that some (a lot) of pain has to be involved to validate the love as real. And worth its (endless) risks....

And if we're lucky, we grow old together, instead of (more) apart alone.

Okay, done monopolizing! I may not believe in romantic love for myself anymore--not whining, it's just how it is--but I sure believe in it generally, and hope my kids know the real thing when they bump into it.

To be honest, I have never found "love songs" to be worth listening to. They have meaning to the performer, but I don't feel anything connection with 2 exceptions...although they are not true love songs.

    Romeo and Juliet (Knopfler)
    Lorelei (The Pogues)

Both those songs strike a nerve with me regarding some past romances and they do not feel stupid at all.
