Yeah when I was the age Lou was in this article I hated everything but Jazz. But then we grow up and become wiser.

when i was a kid, i loved Lou Reed and hated Springsteen
as the years passed i found that reversed - i had more in common with the characters in Springsteen's work than those in Reed's
also - for all i liked Lou reed, he treated people like commodities. he'd take credit for everything, he'd use people to rebuild his career an credibility then would erase them from his work
i especially think his treatment of Robert Quine was appalling
he had talent though - and people were always willing to give him another chance. just a big let down in the end

It really had to be said about San Francisco, and if anyone’s gonna say it it might as well be Lou. At one time, the San Francisco ‘60s bands were my main musical interest. But the more music I hear, the more tedious all those SF bands get. To be fair, most of those bands did some amount of quality work that holds up, but it’s more than balanced out by trash.

I never saw him with the Mothers, but I typically didn't like the Mothers on record anyway. But I saw him several times in the early-mid 80s and thought he was pretty darn good. Not everyone's cup o'tea certainly, but hardly a NO-talent. He ran a tight ship, and I wouldn't have enjoyed being in his band much.

He was an opinionated guy and a notorious SOB. I like hearing his take on things, but probably wouldn't want to be his friend. I'd argue with him and he probably wouldn't like that.
I also enjoy lots of his music. I think what VU did was more revolutionary and has further reach and lasting effect than almost any other 60s band.

FWIW on the Wrecking Crew DVD, they state that when they first met Zappa they thought he was a joke.... until he started playing

Michael Bloomfield said the same thing about the San Francisco bands – at the time when they were most popular. I’m inclined to say the same thing about Lou Reed.
Not a big Zappa fan...but can't play??? Sure Lou...
FYI, Reed begged the RnR HOF to be the one who inducted Zappa. Which is odd considering he never said anything nice about him when he was alive.
While I love a lot of Lou Reed's stuff, when he offers his critiques of others...remember he released this abomination.
