I never saw him with the Mothers, but I typically didn't like the Mothers on record anyway. But I saw him several times in the early-mid 80s and thought he was pretty darn good. Not everyone's cup o'tea certainly, but hardly a NO-talent. He ran a tight ship, and I wouldn't have enjoyed being in his band much.Yeah saw Zappa twice in the early 70's so who am I to say...

Michael Bloomfield said the same thing about the San Francisco bands – at the time when they were most popular. I’m inclined to say the same thing about Lou Reed.It really had to be said about San Francisco, and if anyone’s gonna say it it might as well be Lou. At one time, the San Francisco ‘60s bands were my main musical interest. But the more music I hear, the more tedious all those SF bands get. To be fair, most of those bands did some amount of quality work that holds up, but it’s more than balanced out by trash.
