Looks like some of them made it.

It was -17 last night, with winds pushing 'The feels like' factor to -40+, and these little 'sky rats" (Starlings) made it through, somehow.

Tonight will be a repeat until it starts to warm up over the weekend, with mid-high 40's for at least the first half of next week, but it's going to be brutally cold until then.

For better or worse, I've been trying to help them out a bit by providing a supply of dry cat food to help them get through....softy that I am, but man, can these guys make a poop mess!

Regardless, I feel for these little guys. How do they survive those night time temperatures under these conditions?

Oh, I should mention that the huge pile of cat food on the slab was because the bag tore when I was trying to sprinkle some out, and I accidentally dumped about five pounds of the stuff out there. However, judging by the amounts they can consume in these conditions, I'm sure that it will be all gone by tomorrow morning.

-40C -40F here! We help the hardy sparrows with bird seed. I'll wonder why when they assault the peas sprouting in the spring garden. Sky mice I suppose.

I was hoping to see more snow because I have or can redeem 2.5 lift tickets at Terry Peak.

I know, it is a shocking 48F here. Absolutely freezing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

But seriously, Phoenix weather is the definition of "over-rated." It is either WAY too hot or chilly. It is never really nice for more than a few days at a time. I am not sure what drives retirees here (especially now that prices are no longer low). I am out of here--and northbound--the second I retire.

chickadees , finches , warblers , stellar jays, all go for the seeds , stellar jays , magpies , and occassional crow go for the peanuts

right now I have my deer visiting about 3 times a day , I watched the 3 legged deer joust with another buck almost on the porch , the 3 legged deer held his own and even got the final blow of his antler into the butt of his rival

we named him TRE, for obvious reasons he and his sister were born in the back yard , yesterday he came up to me and sniffed my hand and doesnot shy from me .but is real skidish as it should be .right now we have about 12 " of snow every where -27C right now = -17 F

Really? Given how perfect the weather has been in Phoenix for weeks, I can only assume that this is disinformation intended to curb population growth. I support the concept but doubt it will work.

20 years ago when we first moved into this house, the neigbors had a kitty cat who decided she'd had enough and took up residence in our backyard (hiding out most of the time under one of our sheds).
This precious little ball of fluff lived a whopping 13 years that way!
My wife put food out for her daily and she eventually allowed her to pet and brush her.
Then one day she didn't show up and that was that.
All those Idaho winters under a shed outdoors ...
There's one kitty who's gone to a better place!

P.S. - Skunks LOVE cat food, so watch out!
