I recently went through a good financial set back. Had to sell a majority of my gear. Kept an acoustic and a sentimental T-style build. Now that things are sort of balancing out. I’m looking for a new amp.

I don’t play out much anymore. When I do a 50 watt solid state should do the trick. I sold off a couple pedal boards. And rather not have to buy new pedals, power, and all that. So looking at something along the lines of a Katana, mustang, catalyst.

Any recommendations? I’ve owned the katana MKI before. And was ehh. But I was also playing on a different caliber and was a big tube guy. Looking back with an open mind it seems a lot better now haha.

I think a good choice might be a SuperChamp XD or SE. Decent tube tone, low price, small package. The downside is they have a digital section that cant be replaced if it fails, but they are pretty reliable. Probably $350 used in nice shape.

After decades of playing all kinds of amps, this is the gal for me:

Roland Blues Cube Stage. 60 Watts of LOUD when you need it, but can easily be dialed back to "Bedroom" volume (love those Roland engineers!). Plus there's a headphone jack.
Delivers great Fender-esque tone.
Usable OD and reverb (I prefer an OD box for more control, but it'll do in a pinch).
Simple 3-knob EQ.
2 channels - or you can run both at once.
No tube fragility issues.
Weighs in a skosh over 20 lbs.
Got mine gently used with a dust cover @ Reverb for $450.

I would pick this one too.

+1. I found this X2 in a 12" cab on Craigs list for that very same amount.

I have a Line6 Flextone in the rehearsal room, with the floor board it is pretty awesome and I see these for around $200 quite often. You have to use midi to tweak the effects but it is still cool.

The Blues Cube is great (I have one) but pricey. Not sure how much you want to spend as you come out of the financial challenges.

If you generally prefer Fender sounds, an old Peavey Bandit or Studio Pro can get close and shouldn’t cost you more than $200 tops.

The Boss Nextone might split the difference between a Katana and Blues Cube.

Finally, if you like British tones, the Crush amps from Orange are really good. I sold mine but wish I’d kept it.

Good luck.

I have two that don't owe me much: A Peavey Classic 50 VT (tube power section 2 x 6L6) 2x12 speakers, SS preamp. This one came to me not working, needing new power tubes. That and a reasonable cleanup, I'd need around a Benny Frank for it. The other is a Super Champ XD chassis in a finished wood Princeton Reverb cab, 1x12, I'd need $250 for it. If you're interested in either, let me know, and I'll send some pics.
