Hi Webfoot, if you go to youtube and type in tim lerch lollar 52 & special T, he does a great review of both pickups, I perfer the '52 but I don't need the hotter pickup. Check it out you won't be sorry.
I have the Special T bridge with the Vintage neck and just great all around versatile sound from both. I also use the Cavalier Nashville Lion bridge in two other Teles and those are also great sounding. Think the Lions are 8.2 or 8.3 K.
zhangbucker's Tar Paper is wound right around there, 8.5k. i play & highly recommend his Paul Bunyan bridge p'up at 9.5k. Lots of character & still some telesnickettv & twang, but gusto ballsy.
I have a Special T bridge paired with a p90 in a guitar now, and I love it. If there's any dissatisfaction with that guitar, it's with the p90. I'm building 2 teles now that will both get Special Ts at the bridge. It's hottish and gritty but reacts well to tone knob fiddling and smooths out nicely when desired. I've got it on a no-load tone pot, and that first click from no-load to 10 smooths it out a good bit.
Had the Vintage and swapped for the Special T. Excellent. Still has Tele twang but with a little more girth. Not a huge difference. Same tone - more girth..
Reference? I used to own a 59 Tele and Lollars are the closest, best IMHO.
I tried the Special T bridge and it was nice but prefer the '52 Series of the Lollar bridge pickups. I would recommend the Cavalier Bakersfield/Fat Lion Twin Lion.
I tried the Special T but settled on the Vintage T because I need more twang than girth. Special T does what you say are after though, it was just not what I was after. Horses for courses!
I have the Nash variant which is a tweak on the Special T. I love it. Most hot tele pickups lose their twang but the Special T/Nash/and even the J-Street still twang. Not so IME with pickups like the Texas Special. Even the Fralin Blues Special is darker to my ear.
It's a rounder tone, but still good for country IMO.
I have a Special T in this pinecaster. I agree with most... it's "rounder" or "smoother" but still well within the realm of what's expected from a T-style bridge pickup. Probably more rocker than pure country. Pairs well with the neck P-90.
