Subscription models are garbage. Who wants to rent their tools?

Also while IPads are nice tools for some applications, they don’t like to show you their file systems or work nice with external drives, and you’re going to run out of space pretty quickly if you treat it like a serious recording tool.

Did Waves reverse their decision to move to subscriptions?

As for Apple, I wouldn't be so sure they won't eventually make Logic a subscription service. Although any subscription revenue would be a fraction of Apple's overall revenue stream, it would still be substantial even at $10 per month.

If you own a Mac and have been happily using Logic Pro for years, you're not likely to jump to another DAW. Logic is just too good and stable.
I believe they did backpedal.

Actually iPads have had a files app for some time and you can transfer files from a usb drive on older models and directly via usb-c on newer models (Air, 10th gen, Pro). If someone is seriously going to use it on iPad, I would imagine they will have to opt for models with 256 gb or more.

I think Logic for iPad will have appeal to a portion of Logic users. It will be great for working when traveling or at home for sketches, and scratch pad. It's such a big step up from GarageBand and it will be easy to go between your Mac and iPad. It also has some killer touch, pencil functionality along with virtual instruments (similar to GarageBand).

It won't be for everybody. I likely will not subscribe as I'm happy just working from my iMac or MBP.

I have a 256gb ipad, and as far as photo and video editing goes, i found it fine to work on but i was always running out of space and i could not consistently get external drives to play nice with it, or the files app. I didn’t have a working laptop at the time and since I got another laptop, I haven’t tried to use the ipad for any kind of serious editing. I think iOS would need to get more similar to OS X for this to be comfortable for anyone trying to use an ipad for serious work, and apple seeming to be allergic to just letting you get at the underlying file system is a serious detriment to the ipad being a usable tool. Also the lack of a headphone jack is obnoxious - there are some cool soft synth and drum machine apps you can get, but my bass amp doesn’t have Bluetooth so i don’t know how you’re supposed to use that in a performance or in a studio setting.

If that's a trend, I see many "happy" customers in the future.
Subscription Logic, subscription Waves, and an iPad that runs out of space. way to go

...if you unfortunately don't know how to click around the issues.

I am going to bite the bullet and use it anyway. I go overboard on memory like always and have a Pro with a gig. We’ve got some great peaceful places around here and I really enjoyed bringing a guitar and iPad to a secluded beach and writing in GarageBand at first, but then would not get it to transfer up to Logic Pro on my Mac seamlessly. I also think I’m going to get the Apogee Symphony Desktop.

I probably will wait for reviews to see how it integrates with the desktop version though.

I still hate subscription based models though!

I was hoping I wouldnt "need" to upgrade anything.. my iPad is being used by my son for entertaining purposes and I dont want the added expense of changing it to a newer one!

but maaaaaan, I want it.. even just paying for it whenever I need it and cancel/pause subscription if I dont. LOL

Logic Pro for iPad is Supposed to be available in the App Store at 1PM tomorrow. Didn’t remember to note time zone. Duh…

One slightly less sucky thing I thought of about the subscription model on Apple devices, I have theorized/justified below.

I would bet a lot of people who will “rent” Logic Pro already own the desktop version that’s still $199.

Looks like the interoperability is going to be pretty tight between the iPad version and the desktop version. You should be able to accurately transfer the iPad version to the desktop version well enough so that you still have access to your music and project elements and files in the desktop version even if you let the subscription expire for the iPad version.

I think it’s not that bad if that interoperability works as advertised. Say You know that you are going on a camping/adventure trip for a month and turn on the subscription and then transfer everything into your desktop when you get home and turn off your iPad version.

I hope it’s truly powerful enough to not be a “sketchbook” tool, but something that is powerful enough for the finished product.

I really can’t believe Apple will change desktop Logic Pro to a subscription model cause that’s generally not how they roll.

Yes, you need a computer and to spend $199, but you won’t ever have to pay for an upgrade. Apple has added some pretty big upgrades over the last several years and they know their loyal fanbase would scream bloody murder if they went to a subscription only model for the desktop version that disables your music if you stop paying the subscription every month/year.

I think of the iPad version to just be another tool for Logic users. I can it particularly appealing to more modern music (EDM, etc). Most folks are going to do their "heavy lifting" on the desktop and I would expect project compatibility between desktop and iPad will be very tight. (iOS and macOS have been moving closer together for the past several years.) From the videos and Apple's webpage, it looks like it blends the best of both worlds of Logic and GarageBand (thinking of the virtual instruments).
Modern iPad with M1 and M2 processors are certainly powerful enough to run Logic well and the Air and Pro models have 8 to 16 GB RAM.
Connect a good quality hub to the USB-c port and you've got plenty of ports, headphone out, etc.
I would think folks who are seriously interested in this would invest in an iPad Pro. So it's going to be pretty pricey.

Just watched a tutorial. For what I do there is nothing there for me. It looks like the orphan child of GarageBand and Logic or GarageBand on steroids.

I was excited when it was announced but I’ll pass.

Well…It doesn’t appear to be what I was hoping for based on early reviews. It seems like a hybrid of Logic and GarageBand. Seems designed for electronic/dance music.

I may try it, but I’m not as excited as I had hoped.

Even using a hub, my ipad is finicky about external drives.

I was surprised to see them do this, only because using a DAW on the iPad has been well established with things like Cubasis and Auria Pro. I've used the latter for years.

For what it's worth, Auria Pro works with older iPads. I was using it on an iPad Air 2 (I think from 2014?). It screams on the iPad Pro with the M1 processor.
