Hey All,

I'd been thinking about some work i had done on a few of my guitars recently and i thought i'd share my appreciation for how awesome my local tech is. I'm from Calgary AB, and i've been taking my instruments to a privately owned tech shop in Axe Music for about 4 years or so now.

This man has done numerous jobs for me, including putting together my first and second partscaster (setup, nut filing, etc.) and basic setup's done on my tele's, bass and acoustic guitars.

This man does phenomenal work and always gives 200% on every job he does. I recall one time i took my first tele in for a mod job to a different tech (at Guitarworks) to rout a middle position pickup in my tele. He did the job and everything was ok, but when i removed the pickguard some months later i discovered the sloppy rout job he'd done. I don't know what would be considered a "standard" among tech's but this kinda looked like a hack job. Fast forward some time to when i took in a guitar that required a battery rout. My new tech (Jim is his name) did a completely neat and flawless job by comparison. You can easily tell the level of quality he puts into every job.

And he's a great guy to top it off. I've had my tele in twice for a setup now (my partscaster) and since it was a USACG made neck, the wood has been continuously shrinking causing sharp fret edges on the sides of the neck. Every time i've brought it in since the first initial setup, Jim has done the filing on the frets free of charge.

Anyways, this thread is for all the awesome local techs in your neighborhood that keep your guitars serviced and in top condition.

Cheers,
Joel

Life is easier with a great tech - that's for sure.

For me it's either our own Rob D. for my electrics, or the new guy in my area Ian Davlin at (link removed) for the acoustics. Ian just did a complete neck reset on my Martin and it came out really, really well.

Why thank you my friend, for the " shout out ", since I couldn't find a Tech like the one you speak of, I took it upon myself to learn how to do my own set-ups and minor repairs..

Oh you're welcome! I wish i knew more about the physics involved with it all. Sometimes it seems overwhelming how much there is to know.

But yes indeed, this thread is also a tip of the hat to everybody who is skilled in the DIY area of guitar tech work.

Cheers!

I know what you mean Joel, my life's gotten easier because of Jeff my guitar tech from Top Shelf Guitars.

If you're in the UK, London area, check out Jonathan at Feline Guitars.

http://www.felineguitars.com/

He knows how to treat a tele. He makes some dazzlingly good guitars. All I've used him for so far is for refrets and a face-to-face source of parts and good advice. Everytime I go to his shop, though, I'm in grave danger of coming away with more than my missus was expecting...

Larry Fitzgerald at Sam Ash in Huntington, is
'the Man" he's a genuinely nice guy, with serious skills.
John James there is very good as well, he did a Grind and polish on my 52 like parts axe, and it plays great.

Evan is a guitar tech located on the Upper West Side of NY. He did a fine job mending the cracked neck on my Les Paul. Apart from the haunting moment of the mishap, there's hardly any trace of the accident at all, and it plays wonderfully.

He is a tele lover like the rest of us, is awesome at what he does, reasonably priced, and he also does hella great amp work too. if you are in the Traingle area of NC or anywhere near it, I would recommend him!

None better in this area.

Vista may work for someone in Oceanside such as yourself, but for those of us in the city of San Diego, I've always been very happy with Fred's work at the Repair Zone (in Kearny Mesa area of SD).

Anybody who needs an excellent technician in the northern Virginia area needs to check out Daniel Carbone at Arlington Fretworks.

I highly, highly, highly recommend him. Super nice guy and knows his stuff.

Er...that's why I did qualify it with "in this area.", rather than state "in San Diego County."

Wish I could give a good recommendation in the Atlanta area, but I can't. Mine went from really good to really bad... If anyone has a suggestion for the Atlanta area, I need a new contact.

As far as amps, Jeff Bako at Bakos Amp works. He is great.

Buckdancer's Choice in Portland, Maine did a neck re-set on a Martin D-1 for me under warranty...no small task, and they did a masterful job of it.
