Lord have mercy..
I lived near Hopkins in the late '60s and was lucky enough to see him play quite a few times.
He is a mesmerizing entertainer.
He would usually step outside for musician's lubricant and we would chat with him.
One of the very greatest of the Texas Bluesmen. 'Mesmerizing' sounds about perfect.
In 1968 went to see him at the “Love Street Light Circus and Feel-Good Machine” in Houston. I’m a country boy and I was expecting a psychedelic band.
Boy, was I surprised! It was just Lightin’ and a drummer. The drummer used his floor Tom to hold his ashtray, drink, and a ham sandwich. I was too dumb to understand what he was doing, so I split after the first set.
Now his photo is in my music room. Go figure!
I have a picture of Hopkins in my living room.
He is shown walking down the street by a bunch of row houses that are on Alabama St. in Houston's Third Ward.
Sweet groove, really takes its time.
Nice cut Ellroy...gonna pick it up a little now...
My very favourite Lightnin' Hopkins recording. In fact my favourite blues recording and definitely one for my Desert Island Discs. Yep...mesmerizing indeed.
Lightning Hopkins, definitely one of my favorites. When I went off to school a guy down the hall got me listening to old blues. When I heard Lightning it really caught my ear.
