Dad bands are mocked pretty regular but middle aged guys should probably never play thrash and death metal.

A few years back, I went down to see a buddy’s nephew play in a “battle of the bands”. Almost all the bands were late teens/early 20s.

The exception was a death-metal band made up if guys in their 40s. They ended up getting 2nd place, but it wasn’t a good look.

Life is indeed odd. Right now I know a lot of people who are struggling with all sorts of issues. It seems to be a time on the planet where massive uncomfortable changes are happening. I tell my younger friends, "life gets weirder as you get older", and as they have gotten older, they agree.

Life isn't about what you want (though at times you get that), but what is put in front of you. Be thankful for what you have because it could be worse.

You can never tell when TDPRI John will show up at your door and hand you a custom made "get off my ______" fill in the blank sign.

I just let it happen. I keep writing/recording 3 different styles. One day is hard rock, then next its industrial, then I'm doing some depressing Cure kind of things. All from different phases of my life. Thats part of the reason I never finish a project. :)

Funny, the same happens to me.
I don't like music having codes. Rockabilly is really good when you get into the hasil adkins / bloodshot bill territory, it is a bit boring coming from the more classical acts.
I don't mind mixing country and death metal. It is fun. And i probably have ADD, so this way short songs plus musical shifts are always better.

@Doomguy what is your related DM gear ?

Good on you Doom. Life is odd, this is life.
Go ahead and follow your instincts to your next level. You are not loosing anything, it will always be there for you to pull it back into your new You.

I have a Jackson RR with a dimebucker loaded into the bridge and a couple pedals, a Boss Metal Zone and a DOD Death Metal. I'll never get rid of my HM-2 though.

What part wasn't the good look? Getting 2nd place, or being in their 40s?

Enjoy the ride. A bit of a change now and again never hurts, IMO.
Sure, it takes discipline and ‘stick to it-ness’ to make progress, but you can’t force it either.

If you’re an established artist with a following it’s harder to change, but for a local player - be yourself. It’s important to think about where we are and how we got here, but don’t agonize too much.

My covers band is doing some stuff at the moment that I would never listen to without a gun to my head. Everything from disco to metal and back again via mainstream pop. Don't like any of it.

But playing it is a different experience. You learn a lot - and you learn to appreciate what goes into stuff that you would normally run a mile from.

I hate having my mind opened. But sometimes I need it.

Admittedly, I am an old guy but without the “vintage” guitars and black face amps. Change is good I believe you mentioned. It IS the only real constant in life. Find a new musical direction or two or whatever draws you in. Maybe you find a new musical “you”, or maybe you circle back to where you were when you started. Maybe you find a new oasis along the way find that’s what you have been needing/looking for. In any case, good luck in all your journeys going forward.

I kinda wish I'd gone through "stages" like a lot of people have done. Too much Stravinsky and Armstrong and Bernstein and not enough Dolenz and Tork, Simmons and Frehley. I can't find things in my past musical interests that I can just throw away or put away. Everything I used to like, I still like.

I kinda envy the folks who get "reborn" in their musical tastes as the O.P. is right now.

I suggest your reread what you have posted, apply the years of personal experience that posted and come back in a day or two and let us know your thoughts on going forward. You can look at having been given a roadmap with lots of roads to travel; you just need to identify the destination you are aiming for, plan your route, and start the journey. Good luck.

Fire up an old musical on AMC, and play to the soundtrack. That ought to get anyone out of a rut. :)

if death metal is about being the observer or participant in the destruction of society and the world as we know it.

good country music is about being the observer or participant in the destruction of the individual.

So, you know, you will always have a home if you grow weary of shoe gaze and stoner rock... (good to have options.)

I played in country and country rock bands in the 80's, a classic rock cover band in the 90's then straight country (with a side gig in more r&b gig) from 2000-pando

I'm playing around being a hummer/strummer guy now...

musicians play music, guys who work in record stores put records in genres.

Canned Laughter ruined a funny skit.

Canned laughter, rings in my ears the morning after
Canned laughter, would cans save a big disaster?
Spreads around the room like a tumour, I'm not exactly in good humour
I wish it came just one joke sooner, then I'd have to laugh
. . .
