Very evident they started out as a fusion band.

Note the little whoops when Mark forgot to retune his low string back to E but it takes him only a second to sort it all out.

"Hot Water" is the tune that always pops into my head when I think of them.
I always think of them as a 'fusion' band (whatever that actually means...)

    Really good musicians.

    Decent songwriters.

The production is positively 80s and the guitar tones haven't stood the test of time.

    Son & Daughters has.

I was sweet 17 when this was aired. I saw them live a few years later in San Siro stadium on a bill that included Chris Rea, amongst others.

Sounds like Bruford with a sax player. These guys were quite good.
    I had no idea.
    Thanks.

As if he sang while he played those bass riffs.
    Nuts.

Look at the amp Boon Gould was using...
Again, the most eighties amp you can imagine, solid state offering two sounds: clean and loud and clean and louder. The distortion he had going is indeed atrocious but then again you shouldn't expect a warm, creamy tone with that kind of amp.

They were a bit of 'guilty pleasure' of mine at the time.

After Mark King became the caricature 80s bass player, they became deeply unhip, in the UK at least.

Hard for me to count them as "fusion" - at least in my experience most of those bands had lots of wanky solos and less focus on singing. Certainly tight and that dude plays bass like a machine. Kinda wears me out after a tune or two.

OK never mind, I just watched the last clip in the OP. That definitely qualifies.

I've owned a JC for 30+ years. Judicious knob twiddling, a decent stomp box and an ear for tone will produce better than that can of angry bees.

Besides, other amps were also available in '84, so no excuse for that horrendous tone.
