I always thought that intro lick to “When Doves Cry” was mind blowing. Still do.

Prince was a brilliant guitarist, and I personally love his playing, but I think he was correctly rated as a fantastic guitarist.

To me it was Prince's skills as a pianist and keyboardist that are more often underrated. Here's a video of him comping Summertime with his band at rehearsal, calling out the changes, and still throwing out tons of great jazz and blues licks. Phenomenal playing

I don't know you guys. I've thrown out all my CDs and LPs and DVDs and am just gonna listen to (and watch) Prince play the solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" to the exclusion of everything else for the rest of my life. I have some vacation accrued.

I mean the guitar work in his Super Bowl performance were at least on that level or possibly even above it. I'm not a huge fan of him and am not super familiar with his work, but I do respect his work, and he really could play guitar in a spectacular fashion.

Incredible shredder & composer. Second to none performer, just gifted AND hard working. But....

His lyrics were a drag. I can’t enjoy his music, to this day, because his lyrics were so goofy as to be distracting. The juxtaposition of religiosity and sex was banal. Clumsy, even. It’s a trope. He could have benefitted from a partnership, or even hiring someone to write lyrics; but I expect the he worked at such an accelerated pace, who could keep up?

Not to cast shade on his memory or work, but it has always put me off.

It's a fair criticism and yet he wrote plenty of lyrics/songs that had zero of that content in them

    one example

You could still call those lyrics goofy I suppose. I think of them as cooly offbeat
