Thinking about building one. Show and tell if you've got one...
Sorry I can't help, but I'm considering changing the body on my avatar Tele and fitting some TV Jones Classics I already have and re-using the pickups in another Tele. Since I already have some Gold paint left over from a CAR Jaguar project I did this summer, I fancy making my Cab look like the Custom shop ones from a few years back. Mine will use a 'Fat '51 U MIM neck with a maple fingerboard instead of Rosewood though.
Something like this:
I'm not 100% sure how to get the binding effect on the edge though, so need to read up...maybe just mask off and spray the sides/back with tobacco tinted clear nitro. Then spray the front gold, then clear coat over the whole body?
Sorry, can’t help either, as I didn’t really build it, just routed out the neck of my ‘60s styled MIJ and added a TV Jones Classic and some other bits and bobs.
Sort of a rough and ready rock and roll rat rod version of a Cabronita.
But here’s some photos anyway, cos, you know…
I'd like to fit a control plate onto my black Squier Cab like that, but am fearful of boogering up my pickguard.
I did this one on a whim a few years ago. The pickup is a Fender Fidelitron.
I never could think of anything else to engraved on the pickguard.
Sorry for the dust, I just dug it out of storage yesterday.
I didn't want to call it a Cabronita, because it isn't really, so it became Bastardo de Sancho.
On the weekend of assembly I realized I hadn't ordered string ferrules so I fashioned this ferrule block from a piece of 1/2" aluminum. I kinda like it though.
This guitar hadn't seen much use but I must say that this is the most useful tone knob of any guitar I have
A few I have done
I bought a pick guard from Amazon.jp. Just some no-name aftermarket part that shipped from China. Took a gamble that the neck pickup rout on the pick guard would match where I put the TV Jones - figured the leading edge of all pickup cavities would be roughly the same, and I’d routed back from that leading edge. Worked out fine.
Then I traced where my existing control plate lay onto the pick guard, and used my router on that. Routers will cut through pick guard plastic really smoothly. Ironically though, although I freehanded the curve part nicely, which was the theoretical difficult bit, things slipped on the ‘easy’ guided straight edge and I gouged out a wobbly looking bit. Not super noticeable though, and I got over it.
Point is though, you can probably buy cheap pick guards if you mess yours up.
Here’s my current workhorse Cabronita.
It’s a 2011 MIA Telebration Cabronita body, with an AllParts TRO Fat neck, TV Jones Supertron (n), Classic+ (b), and Hipshot.
I moved the switch up top.
It stays in tune well and sounds great.
MIM Cabronita Thinline body, MIM 69 Thinline Telecaster neck.
This is a semi hollow Cabronita’ish build with Honduras Mahagony body, Maple cap, Spanish Cedar neck and Cocobolo fret board and a Gibby switch for good measure.
This one is not a Cab per se, but it is very Cabronita inspired, and a blast to play. I call this one "El Bastardo" because of the mash up of Tele, Jazzmaster, Gretsch, and Gibson details.
I have never built one.
I absolutely love looking at them, but; for some odd reason I don't care for playing them. I can not articulate why I can not bond with one either, neither in S style or T style.
Really the strangest peeve I have with guitars. Not going to post pictures because it's a factory unit.
The green one I made the neck and body, it was my 2014 TDPRI build challenge guitar that nobody liked. Alder body and birdseye maple neck with rosewood board. TV Jones Classics. I made the pickguard, knobs and neck plate.
The black one is a 2011 Telebration body and I made the neck with flame maple and a wenge board. TV Jones Powertrons. It has a stacked pot for tone and volume and I made the tort pickguard and back cover.
I have a couple: The two guitars have TV Jones Classics with one having a Seymour Duncan BG1400 in the bridge. The Fiesta Red in the middle of the pack has the Seymour Duncan Hot Rod set with Filtertron style pickup covers.
Nice! I have that same neck for an up and coming project that I am working on at the moment. How do you like that TV Jones Classic Plus in the bridge? I am thinking about installing one in my thinline to give it some more punch.
Love the pickups!
They’re my all time favorites.
Are these for personal use or do you sell these?
The first one, the purple thinline, is mine. The other two are gifts I made for friends. All my builds that are not for me have been gifts for friends and family.
Not a "tele" cabronita, but one just the same, I guess. It has become my #1.
What is it?
