These men and women may not be as well known as Jack Elam, Denver Pyle, Bradford Dillman, Bruce Dern or Claude Akins, but they show up just as much in classic TV, from westerns like Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, and Bonanaza, to such other classic staples as Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock, Mission Impossible, The Twilight Zone, and others, to the 70s detective shows like Kojak, Ironside, Mannix, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, and others. I can't show pictures of many of them, because I don't know most of their names, so I can't search for pics of them, But, a few that I do know are Harold J. Stone, John Dehner, Jessie White, John Anderson and Nehemiah Persoff. So, let's hear it for these amazing men and women that contributed so much to the classic shows that we all love.

One of my 95 year old mother's favorite films is The Fastest Gun Alive, with Glen Ford. John Dehner has a supporting role (bad guy sidekick to Broderick Crawford) Very familiar face, but I had to look up his name several years ago.
There are MANY supporting, character actors that are as familiar as our family, that we don't know their names.
Thanks to all these folks for their places in our TV memories.
PS....if you don't know a name, but you know a show, check IMDB.com, on the cast of characters. You can often figure them out.

i don't know many of these folk's names, but i love seeing their familiar faces in anything. i have a great love for "character actors"! they all made whatever they were in special, i'll even say sort of magical because they made it all familiar.

i love catching the recurring actors in Columbo.

There's a whole bunch of podcasts that talk about television and movie stars of "yesteryear", and most of those podcasts defer to this one...

Stuart Margolin was all over TV in the 70s in guest roles.

I've seen DeForest Kelly, the actor who portrayed Dr. McCoy in Star Trek in a few TV westerns. They were so popular in the 50s, most actors then appeared in them to get their start.

I found another one who I was trying to identify, and was a fixture in a lot of westerns, RG Armstrong, who was also a playwright. He must have been in at least a half dozen episodes of Gunsmoke, as well as every other popular western series, and apparently worked for Sam Peckinpah a lot.

Just saw him in Evilspeak (1981) with Clint Howard, so of course his face is going to pop up everywhere. Nature of the Internet.

A lot of actors who went on to fame in their own series, like the Strat Trek clan, the Mission Impossible gang, and many others, got started in westerns, and shows like Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock, and other popular 50s series, but i was thinking more of the character actors that never became stars, but were still fixtures throughout TV from the 50s until the 70 or even 80s.

I watch a lot of old TV shows. Westerns are my favorites.
I usually have them on in she background when I'm noodling on the couch with my guitars.
    Here are two more.
