On, definitely. The Robot came without one & as the others have said it just looks naked.. sort of like the Tele's that come without guards.

ON. But I took mine off my Casino hollowbody. A Les Paul looks naked without a guard, but a hollowbody should show off its beautiful f-holes.

Since I don't play with a pick they are really just decoration for me...

My LP copy came without one...it's probably 35 years old at least and been through who knows how many owners, so it's lost to the sands of time.

I need to get one for it...not only do I think Pauls look "not right" w/o a pickguard, it appears as if mine once hung in a shop window for a long time, because it has "tan lines" where the pickguard should be:

In fact, I'm trying to decide between a black or cream colored pickguard. If I went with cream, I'd also change the pup rings and selector ring to cream.

WOW...Not the "pickguard on or off" question.

At the MLP forum this would be looked at like a "whats up with the whole relic thing" type of question.

I have 5 les pauls...all with guards on!

:)

I can't believe I'm the first to say off. I can't bring myself to drilling the holes.

I seconed the motion, OFF! But then again I don't rest my fingers there either. Just another one of those personal preference things:D

Nice looking top BTW. Would've made a sweet looking mandolin back!

On, but really only for cosmetic/style purposes. I've got a goldtop and I like the way the pickguard goes with the color of the P-90 pups, switch ring and binding. Kind of ties it all together, like wearing the right tie with a certain shirt.

I started this thread this morning while I was experimenting with my pickguard on and off.

I have to agree with the majority....I prefer it on.
My wife said it looked better off (it's a nice tobacco sunburst) but I still decided to leave it on. Didn't seem 'finished' with it off.

Mines off, because the it is broke in several places. I have consider replacing it but looks good without so I am leaving it off for now.
