In this song it appears to be a pet name for, presumably, a lover; at any rate it's not a nonsense word. In Louisiana slang, "gumbo yaya" means, roughly, everyone talking at the same time. There may be more history in the French language; at any rate the song became something of a hit in a French translation.

Significance of the lyrics aside, (which I like) I'd like to know the "setting" of this (obviously) mimed performance? Guys in straw hats, with bow-ties and sleeve garters? Was the Dixieland band on next?
