Seriously. His hair looked plastic, his glasses were werid, and he dressed so weird. Every time I see photos or video of him from this period I kinda get chills up my spine. I picture him drivng a van around with a glove box full of candy.

No disrespect to his talent, just his fashion sense.

i think carl was caught up in the "elvis" school of dress.

with the big glasses and bad looking toupee (not many good looking ones out there to this day) and overstated dress.

kinda scmaltzy now, by todays standards unless you take a good look around and realize that todays fashions for men arent that exciting or tasteful, either (imho).

in other words, carl was just caught up in the fashion(s) of his times, and it carried on till his departure.

but a great and influential guitarist non the less, and even more importantly, a seemingly sincere and nice man.

Perkins is promenant in the Johnny Cash documentary filmed in the late '60s after Luther's death.
What an icon IMO, just traveling around in a Dodge motorhome with Johnny and June, performing at county fairs and such.
Fortunatey the producer had the sense to get him playing "Blue Suede Shoes".

Here in Nashville, Carl was a spokesman for Apollo Hair Systems. My dad wore those for a while....the weave little snaps into your hair, and the wig pops on!

By the way, I saw Carl play quite a few times, including an early 1980's CDB Volunteer Jam, as well as just a few month prior to his death opening for the Rev Horton Heat at the Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas.

The rug and the glasses looked so ridiculous that it was hard to watch him.

But Carl Perkins in the above mentioned Cash documentary is as cool as they come: fresh suit, killer pompadour and the utmost stage confidence.

That was a guy who belonged on a stage. We've come a long way from that to the shoe-gazers that are so prominent up here.

I was fortunate to have him- he came to our show and was one of the best people you'd ever want to meet.

Did you know, early on, George Harrison was so taken with CP that he changed his name to Carl Harrison for a while?

Me neither. In an interview a few years ago he talked about enjoying less commercial success than some of his peers, which he ascribed to his decision to stay closer to home and raise his family. It caused him to pass up opportunities that might've helped his career. He said that while a number of his contemporaries had drug problems, problems with the law, multiple marriages, his kids had no reason to be ashamed of him. I'll always remember that.

Carl Perkin's was the coolest cat in anybody's town , he had a bunch of bad luck at the onset , car accident's , electric fan's etc. He was one of the original "Sun" guy's. He also wrote "Blue Suede Shoe's" , if it were not for Mr.Perkin's ya'll may not have had the Beatle's to listen to , according to George and Paul in a few interview's .

He was on the ground floor of rock and roll for that time , He and Buddy and Chuck & Bo , the list could go on(I know) really pissed off alot of parent's , looking back on footage now , it seem's quite tame , but back then it was quite an issue......Cheer's to you Carl!!!!

I was checkin' out E-bait a few year's back and found some S.O.B. that use'd to work for "Apollo" hair floggin' one of Carl's hair thang's for low bux

There is no reason in the world to put down Carl Perkins... he was a great man who cared more about his family than his career. He was only married ONCE, and had four kids that have nothing against him, which is amazing for what he accomplished in his musical career.
Carl grew up poor, who barly had anything to eat, and didn't have good clothes on his back either. I believe Carl was thankful just to have clothes, and glasses in his later days, from what he had to deal with when he was growing up.
Carl was a great man, I know his daughter, Debbie, and one of his sons, Stan, and they have nothing bad to say about him-- all they have to say is what a great husband and father he was.

One person's cool fashion is another's idiocy. I've seen plenty of band websites (some of them members here at the TDPRI) where I think the members look ridiculous. I don't know how they can go on stage looking so silly and egotistical. Is it my place to judge or make fun of them? IMO, it's a little juvenile to make fun of someone's appearance.

I look at pictures of myself 10 years ago and wonder what I was thinking. It's a matter of perspective.

I saw Carl at the Wildhorse in Nashville during Summer NAMM in 1996. Yeah, he had that look....

But that bald old man kicked ass!

I went up front and shook his hand as he finished the final encore. I was in tears. I got more out of witnessing that concert than I can quantify.
