Right, time to start putting this thing together. :D

After several coats of clear satin, I gave the frets the old Lard and Chicken (or Lobotomy and Cupcakes, whatever works for you). ;)

Also got the nut cut and ready for sizing.

    Cut out the holes

    Put the ferrules in

And, despite the paint getting crushed where the black lines meet the leading edge of the ferrule, after a little re-blacking I got them to a level I was happy with.

    In with the tunas:

More updates to come throughout the day ;)

Brilliant stuff Phil! Did you manage to get black strings or is that secret information still?
Just a brilliant concept and execution mate! Thanks for you help on the video too.

You can see how much we get ripped off over here for guitar related items. These strings are approx US$20 here.

But they are very, very BLACK!!! :D

    String ferrules in:

Note the stippled surface. I won't use the mod podge for surfacing again. After seeing it completely peel off the front I was loathe to do too much sanding on the back and sides. It does have several coats of clear acrylic over the top however. The front, which is just clear satin acrylic, is smooth as a baby's butt. I haven't needed to sand that at all.

Body, let me introduce you to Neck. Neck, Body. Pleased to meet you. :D

    Bridge next.

I hadn't seen this one before now. Man, that's a clever idea. And it looks like its very well executed. I can't wait to hear this one.

There is no way in the world I could make this guitar. I don't pay that much attention to the specs :D My motto is more like 'Build it big and sand it to fit'. Now I see why you were so frustrated at the beginning. Excellent work!!!

    Kwerk,

This is coming together, and I the concept is just so original, who would have thought it.

I used another Wilkinson bridge to set my intonation and string height. I'm concerned about the longevity of the paint on the brass saddles, the etch primer appeared not to have the desired effect on it.

I jury rigged the pickup wires (in this case a Bill Lawrence Keystone) so I could use an electronic tuner.

Some rather hefty saddle correction. I may have somehow made the pocket too deep, though for the life of me I can't figure out how - I just followed the lines!

Duplicated the result on the painted bridge:

Everything seems to play quite nicely, which is good.

The cruddy old no name pickups come from an old Korean tele copy I bought about 25 years ago. The wires were red and blue on each, so I substituted some black and white wiring. Cut close to the pickup, and heatshrinked.

Tested them and they were both fine.

So, wiring time. I used a metal control plate as a soldering platform. Once the off body stuff was done, I hooked up the pickups.

Substituted out for the acrylic plate, and got down to some provisional reassembly.

The black strings are perfect for it. :D

Almost there. Still gotta do the endpins, complete the nut, and string trees. I also need to touch up a few screw heads and a couple of other wee problem areas, a problem I knew would be inevitable before I even started assembling it.

Oh yeah, one other thing I forgot to mention earlier. ;)

When I first came up with this crazy idea, the very first thing I thought of was the idea of inking the sharp edges. The thing I wanted to do the most was show the engraved lines on the back of the kluson style tuners. After quite a bit of paint and clear, the lines had vanished without a trace. I considered getting the pen out, but it was obvious that wouldn't work. So, out with the decal paper:

    And, onto the tunas.

    Sorry, I mean the tuners.

Unfortunately, I stuffed the A tuner. A little too high. A couple of the holes might have been too close to each other too, I had a few paint chips putting them in place. A touchup tomorrow, no probs. ;)

I'm off to bed. It is very, very late. Or early. take your pick. Night, y'all.

Hmm yeah... you should check your work against the schematic. It might help to get the drawing really close to the body, so that you can almost visualize the drafted lines as if they were actually a part... of... the... guitar...

    Should work.
