The current Rolling Stone has a profile of Kris Kristofferson, by Ethan Hawke(!). I was reminded to post this because of the Haggard thread; Kris is another of those renaissance men, the likes of which who don't seem to be up and coming anymore. At least Kris is still with us and is still knocking around. An excerpt~

Kris Kristofferson is cut from a thicker, more intricate cloth than most celebrities today: Imagine if Brad Pitt had also written a Number One single for someone like Amy Winehouse, was considered among the finest songwriters of his generation, had been a Rhodes scholar, a U.S. Army Airborne Ranger, a boxer, a professional helicopter pilot — and was as politically outspoken as Sean Penn. That's what a mother****in' badass Kris Kristofferson was in 1979.

Kris Kristofferson: The Last Outlaw Poet

Oh yeah, just because Kris dresses down a major country music star whose name rhymes with moby teeth, is no reason to make this thread turn political... my intent is to offer up appreciation of Mr. Kristofferson. Besides, Kris' Waylon quote is even better :D

I read the article last week I believe. Great stuff. Rarely do we see a great article like that in Rolling Stone.

I suggest that you all avoid the Lil Wayne article in the same issue. It was terrible.

Edited to read: Huh, the lead was a fabrication? Shame on Ethan Hawke!

I admire the heck out of Kris, but gotta say, for all the things he does well, he really is a pretty terrible singer....

    :D

Kristofferson has written some great songs and he's a complete natural as an actor, but, man, he has got to have the all time worst singing voice of any high profile recording artist.

He was quoting Waylon, so I reckon that was a shared hatred!

    :D

Don't know if you all had heard or not but the dressing down of Toby is probably made up.

Toby called out Ethan Hawke on it, and said BS, Ethan never responded, and when asked Kris said he is friends with Ethan, appreciates the wonderful article, but does not recall the events.

Kris certainly earned his right to his opinions, which I respect but do not agree with.
Ethan Hawke, on the other hand, is typical Hollywood garbage.

IMHO, Kris is a better singer than Hawke is a journalist. He made up the anecdote in the lead of the story, and as for the rest of it, there are these things called editors. The only part of the story that Hawke actually wrote verbatim was his byline. Maybe.

You're giving garbage a bad name.

Thanks for setting me straight! Geeze, how could he expect to write something like that and NOT get called on it? Or even sued?

Speaking of editors, I'm gonna edit my post above...

I'm thinking the incident is not made up. Kristofferson probably didn't want to add fuel to the fire. Rolling Stone says it stands by the story.

"Why Me" is a beautiful song, only learned recently that KK wrote it.

Hey, I read it on the intermess, it HAS to be true! :p

Anyways, as someone said long ago, I never let the facts get in the way of a good story ;)

& I do agree that ol' Kris certainly won't win any awards for his singing ...

IMHO Kristofferson certainly has a lot more class than that Toby guy. I suspect it is true as has been said earlier. good article tho about a country icon...who says you need a good voice to make it in the music industry!

    Cheers

It occurs to me that discussing Kris Kristofferson and Toby Keith is frankly impossible without discussing politics or at least hinting about them. So, with great reluctance, I'm closing this thread.
