    . . . a.k.a. pianicas, melodions . . . .

    I want one.

I'll spend from $50 to $150. I won't get another, so this one has to last.

    What's hot? What's not?

    Thanks!

Is it so you can play “champagne supernova”?

I’ve always thought melodicas were kind of cool

Don’t know what to look for, most I’ve seen look fairly inexpensive

Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, et al gave them superstar status, so why not?

Jon Batiste plays one every night at the beginning of Late Night with Steven Colbert. I think they're kind of cool, myself. Plenty of info out there if you want to do some homework before you buy. Good luck with your adventure!

From my old surf guitar days, I have one that I bought to learn a background part to one of my favorite songs.
    Melodica solo at 4:49:

BTW, never found a use for it since, but keep trying to add it into some of my original recordings.

Yeah, I've been Googling like crazy and have it narrowed down to two or three.

But you know what happens at TDPRI. You ask whether to get a Thinline or a Deluxe, and everyone chimes in with "American Standard!" "Blackguard!" "Brad Paisley Signature!" "Baja!"

I used to have a Hohner Melodica. Not sure whatever happened to it.

I had a Hohner one at least 50 years ago. They came as two models, alto which was red & soprano which was light green.
Needed a lot of air to fill them, an the fact that the two sets of keys rocked in opposite directions made them difficult to play.
Always viewed them as a bit of a novelty item.

I’ve had good luck with Hohners but if you gig with them they will break after a while; one or more of the keys will go dead. However, that was true of the cheap melodicas I used to use and they were far worse in that regard. Also, remember to blow through them after each use (using the air valve key on the bottom).

If you’re going to gig or record with them, make sure they’re on or close to pitch. I played one that was a quarter-tone off.

Don Cherry made some pretty epic recordings with a basic Hohner.

Yeah, their concertina reeds die, too. i think they just throw harp reeds into situations they can't handle.
