Anyone still using the Klon? Is it as good as the claims, or is there something better out there?

I'm still using one,
claims....I claim I love it,
I stopped looking for something better,
even if there is something out there.

A couple of my thoughts on the Klon,
Its a godsend as a live solo boost,
gain off, it just adds.......girth.
I think it could be called "the real fatboost".
Imagine.. your regular guitar signal is a
5 by 7 index card, with the Klon its an
8 and 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper. I found it worked
better with fender type amps. But now that
I am playing an EL84 Marshall, it took me
a while to get it dialed in. I just needed
to turn up the treble a little bit. Its not
really what the Klon sounds like to me,
its what "it does". It ADDS instead of subtracts.
Notes pop out, with greater definition.
Harmonics, touch sensitivity and sustain
are all enhanced. Whats not to love ? Its the
last pedal I would sell if I had to, and the
first one I would replace if my board was
stolen.

I suggest you at least try one.

Yup....

It's the last OD I'll ever buy. The price is silly but it's really that good. I've had most of the ODs out there and none are quite what the Klon is.

But....

There's a lot that are close for a lot less $$$. Close...

If you're not put off by the price, I'd get one and you'll never look back.

My Klon!!!

I love my Klon to death and it's really hard to top it,but it takes up way to much realestate on my board. I just use my Eternity for a nice clean boost.

From right to left starting at the bottom:
Boss Tuner,Analogman Bi-Comp,Hermida Zendrive,Barber Direct Drive, Landgraff D.O.,Lovepedal Eternity O.D., Boss Noise Supp.,Boss DC-3 Chorus,Boss PHr1 Phaser, Boss Harmonist, Ibanez DE-7 Delay/Echo,Boss DD-3. I just got rid of the Landgraff,Eternity and the Klon earlier this afternoon. I traded all 3 for a 69' Fender Vibrolux Reverb. The amp sound frick'n AWESOME. I think I got the better of the trade.

Pedals

I think the relevant question is how do you get any tone at all with that board full of pedals.

Plug straight in and turn it up! You'll get all the tone you need!

I don't mean to be a smart ass, so please take this in the spirit it's intended.

"Plug straight in and turn it up!" is great for some players....but each player and their situations are unique.

While I love the pure sound of a guitar straight into an amp, many players need to cover quite a bit more sonic ground than the guitar/amp combo allow.

I'm sure his tone is stellar regarless of the pedals.

Wish it were that simple.

I love the tone of a guitar straight into a cranked amp, too. However, I don't know anywhere that I can do that and still be welcome. That's the #1 reason to use a pedal, at least an OD pedal.

There are so many legit musical applications for all kinds of pedals. seriously mang... how many songs you hear on the radio have NO effects on them at all? Think of say, U2 and a record like Unforgettable Fire or Hendrix's work! Valid and powerful musical statements NOT POSSIBLE with out stompers .... why do i even try. seriously it's like shoveling poop against the tide.

If you don't see it you just wont. The above statement is really the kind of statement someone makes when they can only see the world in one way.

If you are happy with only amp + guitar set up then yo, congrats but this is The stomp box were you expect peeps who like pedals to chill. Don't troll and don't put a turd in our punch bowl mang.

It's all about covering your bases!!!

I play in a country variety/original country band. We do alot of covers where a couple of pedal or none just won't cut the mustard. I have to have enough guitars, amps and pedals for any particular gig to do the music justice. Here's are some pics for some of my arsenal that I can mix and match for a desired gig. I'll also show you what ALOT of pedals is on my 3 tier board.

By the way in the 3 amp pic, the one on the Fender on the left is my new (OLD) 69' Vibrolux I picked up yesterday in a trade for my Klon, Landgraff, and my Eternity. If you could hear this amp, youd've done the same.

I almost forgot my guitars. Anyway this is all the equipment I have at my disposal if I need it. Why would I want to ever limit myself to just one guitar and one amp.

Stupid Box and 72' Tele Custom

The yellow pedal with the smile is a Subdecay Stupid Box. It's kind of a marshall tone to a semi fuzz box tone. The Tele is 72' Tele Custom. It was given to my by the steel player in a band I was in about 10 yrs. ago. He was dying and didn't want it to go unused so he gave it to me before he died. That guitar has more sentimental value than any guitar I own. I'll try to get some close-ups. It's been modified somewhat, but it was already like that when he gave it to me. It' still sounds incredible.

Funny how these threads go off track! :) I'm sure the Klon is great. I have a pedal I got recently that does what people say the Klon does. It's the KOT by Analog man. Totally transparent . The OD resembles tube breakup. The clean boost makes the amp sound richer, fuller, bigger. For my needs I don't believe I need anything else.

For what it's worth, I have an old gold "horsie man-graphic" Klon that I've owned for the better part of ten years. Others have came and went, and this one has remained. It's been gigged hundreds of times, and it's one of the few gainers that I actually dig as translated to recording media. With a variety of Fender amps and traditional output strats and teles, nothing else that I've played has done for tone and response what the Klon does, period, end quote. It simply sounds "larger". I even used the thing to project mandolin forward in the mix at a job this weekend. Klon has the single most intuitive and useful tone control of any gainer that I've played. If there's a better circuit out there for its targeted use, I'm all ears.

King of Tone is a wonderful box as well, but sounds very different (to me) than a Klon. It too has tons of headroom and output. The overdrive character in the upper mids and highs is very similar between the Klon and the King of Tone, with the KOT being perhaps a bit more "gritty". What the Klon does like no other is what it delivers with its gain set to 'zero', in tandem with its output volume set to taste. That's the unit's claim to fame - that "pop", that "3D" quality, and please pardon the intangible wine tasting terms.

None of these boxes sound transparent to me, which is why they get along better with some amps than with others. While neither is likely the best choice for the tonestack, I like the KOT better than the Klon with VOX amps, for what it's worth.
