    I agree.

I just find the discussions of the various bands, by people I respect, to be interesting - although sometimes baffling, but always interesting.

I hope you hopeless Kiss apologists will allow me a little leeway, but to me, to come out and tell the World you began playing guitar because of Kiss at age 8 is like a beloved actor telling people he decided to study Shakespeare and go to New York and study under Elia Kazan because he saw The Three Stooges or Bugs Bunny at age 8. You are, with all due respect, assigning too much importance because kids, even precocious, prodigal kids, are still just little kids.

"I humbly accept this Prestigious Award and I must tell you (tears streaming down face), I couldn't have done it without the staffers at the pre-school I attended - they so helped me understand the rich and amazing world that is there if we try! Sniff."

I have to say, Kiss always struck me as a very commercial, almost teeny bopper type of band. But I didn't grow up in that era so maybe I just can't recognize the impact.

This might be one of the funniest things posted in this thread. Having done this for a living my whole life, it's hilarious to me when people feel this way. Here's how it is: Rock music, actually ANY music, if you want to make a living at it and not have a day job, is a business. Period. If you wanna make records, and sell them to people, you have to run a business. I don't care what kinds of romantic stories you think you know about your favorite bands and artists, they are business people, or they would not be in a position to sell you their records. Why do you think they sell records? Or T shirts? Or stickers? Or whatever? To make money, to run the business, so they can more money, and up their visibility, so they can make more money.

See if any of your favorite bands wanna come play your birthday party. The first thing you are going to find, is that that band is a business. It's always about art and expression. But if you want art and expression to pay your bills, there is always a compromise. Nobody rides for free.

A joke? Nah. They were just honest about it. Most of your favorite acts hid behind false nobility and idealism and made you think it was all about the art. Not that they didn't appreciate their fans, anybody with a lick of sense doesn't bite the hand that feeds them. But it pays to know your audience. If your audience is full of idealistic romantics that want their favorite bands to be pure artists, then a smart band shows them what they want to see. Meanwhile backstage, they sweat over figuring out how to up next quarter's numbers. Truth.

Of course it's a business, but it comes down to the quality of the content, which I know is up to personal opinion. But as much as I know about Kiss, they never seemed to have much artistic intent beyond being a fun party band (or whatever their schtick was). The proof is in the records, and they never had a Sgt Pepper's, Pet Sounds or Dark Side of the Moon, nor even seemed to strive for that.

You can make a lot of money AND expand your art at the same time, or simply choose one over the other.

    "Destroyer"!

With the atmospheric intro that sets up the story:

They also demonstrated their musical ambitions with the less successful "Music from the Elder":

Big deal. Sometimes I dont wanna hear "sublime art", I wanna hear some dumb, loud, rock and roll with a good lead guitar player, and Kiss fits the bill. And Pet Sounds, I never could figure out what is the attraction there.

I stole a million licks from Ace Frehley, so sue me.

I was really surprised Kiss got in at all, I thought Jann Wenner hated them with a passion. I read yesterday that Wenner finally allowed fans to vote, and the Kiss Army overwhelmed everybody else.

Dont know if thats true or not...

There was a reason it was less successful. It was horrible.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame does not exist until Yes and King Crimson are in. Until then, it's a popularity contest.

Right. But CrisHendrix contended that they didn't even have the ambition.

It'll always be a popularity contest. Hell, it isn't even much of a contest. It's a business. Who gets inducted is irrelevant to music.

The only thing that makes it any more valid than mine or anyone else's personal HoF is that it has money thrown at it.

I think those who love "fine" music and like to go back and figure out where all the licks came from, like me, we forget this is the hall of FAME. This kid's band has fame, just like the Osmonds did and Justin Bieber. It isn't the hall of origins, nor the hall of heart and soul, nor the hall of wonder, nor the hall of virtuosity, nor the hall of "The Best". You don't have to be good, you just have to be famous. Just like with the Heisman Trophy; you don't have to have merit as a human being, just talent as a ball player.

When I say "Big Mac" you know what it is; it is Famous. When I say Listerine, or Depends, or Viagra, you know what I am talking about. Kiss is the same way. This "Hall" has framed the question their way; the answer is self determined. That's why I'm not complaining that they go in; I would say, it doesn't do the slightest thing to disprove the common opinion which is, their music is shallow almost beyond belief. Most adults who were fans of Kiss as youngsters know this and most of those who know admit this. No, I don't want a Big Mac. Or a Happy Meal. Trust me on this.

I don't understand the desire for 'depth' in what are essentially mass-produced pop songs. I'm a reasonably smart person but I don't feel like I have to prove it with my choice of listening. An earlier poster alluded to Slade's influence on Kiss; both of those bands have produced songs which score 100% on the fun meter, dumb or not. Sure, like any bands that have been around for decades, they've made some stinkers too...you can pick and choose to prove your point either way.

and yet, as a 16 year old kid, who had just got a guitar, and Kiss was my first concert, watching them from the nosebleed section of the old Charlotte Coliseum, my reaction was, instead, "how freakin COOL is this!"

There will always be people who hate them, and always be guys who play guitar, who look back at them with a certain fondness, a nostalgia perhaps for an earlier time... and guys like me, we couldnt care less about the common opinons. Common opinions also like Gungham Style and What Does the Fox Say, and both those *really* suck.
