Well, he moved from guitar to just vox over a year ago. We've only had 3 gigs since then, but we recorded an entire album and did overdubs. Waiting on him to "finish writing the lyrics" on a few before we can do backing vox, mix this bad boy, and press some records.
He comes to half the practices, sings on a few songs, mumbles the rest, and says he is "writing lyrics" the rest of the time.
He used to date our songwriter back in the day, so there is a wee bit of weird in there somewhere.

We are a punk band, not some wordy emo prog outfit.

One of us got approached by a local singer guitarist who likes us.
"Kick him out. He sucks, guys. I'll sing.". This guy has great pipes, has known us forever, and has contacts up the ass.
Hell, chances are one of the labels his current band is on will at least partially foot the bill on pressing this record.

And we would be rolling before Halloween.

I'd like to salvage the situation and try to either light a fire under our singer's butt OR get him back on 2nd guitar. But if he never answers texts or comes to practice it's hard...

Well, what do you guys think?
This is supposed to be fun

    Let's see...

He's not doing his job, it is holding back the band's progress, and you have an offer from a better player.

It looks like the choice is pretty obvious.

Sounds awful complicated for punk, are you sure it’s not some kind of ***** emo band?

I think there's two ways to manage things. One is the usual: You don't say nothing, but You bring on the new guy.
The other way is to have a little powow and discuss about what to do to push the band to the right direction. And soon after that You'll announce the singer change for the common good. It is impossible to perform these acts without anyone getting hurt, but I would recommend the latter way.

sounds like a syd barret scenario, minus the fame and lsd. or at least one of those.

Bring the new guy in. Why can't you have two vocalists? My band has four. It might light a fire under him too. And if it doesn't, ghost him. If he's barely coming to practice and responding to texts he may not even notice.

oh he's being punk , how cute.
    simple, I like simple.
"things aren't working out so your out."
no guilt no blame no explanation ( he already knows they multiple choice why of it,)
no discussion. be polite civil and do not attack his self esteem no matter what.
thank you your services are no longer necessary.
oh you might do it by email or the phone so that he does not lose face and suffer a humiliating scene. that's the nice way of doing it.
or the band could wait until he's at a practice and use the gang tradition of the beat in except in his case he would get a beating out, I only sarcastically mention this as I don't think your band is really that punk ....and would not commit a violent act against anyone.

start with the new guy straight away
the remaining band members call to the old member's place and tell him together that he's out and why he's out. do not dither about - he's out and that's it.
wish him well and do not look back.

tell the songwriter not to date the new singer. I think that may be where things went wrong.

Start practicing with the new guy. Don't tell the old guy and quit communicating with him all together. If he shows up look surprised and say, "I thought you quit." If he says no, just say, "Well I guess you're fired then."

Even if he DOESN'T want out, his sense of dedication doesn't mesh with you guys. Not everyone has the same priorities....that's why this "band" thing is so difficult.

Passed the Audition for a "rock band" in the late 70s. I was into Southern Rock and Blues and thought everyone else was too. Started practicing with them and learning songs. First one was Running with the Devil by some new band named Van Halen, then a Kiss song. After a couple of practices I get some pictures of the band. They broke out a song list I call punk stuff, had costume and make up changes between each set. Later I called the drummer and said, "I don't think this was gonna work out." He said, "No, it's not and our old guitar player moved back in town." Short and sweet, if it ain't working say so.

Clearly, you need to let him go. But I've never been impressed by anyone who would make such a statement to a band member.
