Nah, I'll take The Edge instead...
He doesn't use pedals because they have all the effects he needs in the high-dollar studios he records in.
Goats Head Soup is a phaser-fest.
because nobody in ANY original band, anywhere, uses pedals.
that's just silly.
More technician than guitarist this one.
I think we really need to get on all these piano players using pedals.
What's wrong with the "pure" sound of their pianos?
Are 88 keys not enough?
Why do they need to rely on a crutch like foot pedals?
yeah, I mean Emerson and Wakeman, what a couple of ham-fisted putzs. Couldnt play an original note between them, stoopid drunk knob-twiddlers.
I dont care one bit about KR , and I dont care if good tones comes from a Tubescreamer or from the amp itself, if it sounds good it is good...
I dont have a million pedals , and I have used the same ones for decades , but , oh my , how boring it would be to play without them
There are a couple of pictures of Keith's live rig floating around. Two Tweed Twins, with an always-on Tube Screamer tucked behind them.
No more pedals! Pedals are crutches!
No more crutches! Crutches are, um, crutches!
No more computers, calculators, eyeglasses, BIC pens, George Foreman griddles!

Martins and Takamines ONLY!
Here's a couple of pics of his live rig.
It is really a question of finding the right sounds for the track. Always has been.

This is from a few years ago, but here is Kieth's rig from the front
AND here it is from the back
Maybe his tech does the stepping for him?
A man after my own heart, as far as pedals go anyway.
This was my first thought. It's not just those two songs - that phaser effect is all over the entire Some Girls album. There are all kinds of effects on 200 Light Years From Home. I'm sure others I'm not thinking of as well.
And yet he somehow managed to keep the same album charting for 741 weeks. Imagine that!
Anybody can get overdriven and distorted tones to sound good given the right amp setup. Have a feeling those people are fine players, perhaps unaware that they are limiting their own vocabulary however.
But, uhm, isn't this forum called "The Stomp Box"? Why is this topic even here? To prove once and for all that Keith Richards is a lying liar? Okay, in that case, carry on, then.
As you get older balancing on one leg as you use the other to press pedals does become more difficult. He has my sympathy.
Apparently that fall he took from the tree a few years back has damaged his memory.
