Do you really need to remove your low e string to play Keith's stuff? Does it matter if you don't? I'd rather keep it I might be so bold..

Well I'm pretty sure Keef said yer supposed to take it off the guit and hang your old lady with it

Found it, here's the quote from his autobio:
"Or you could save it for hanging the old lady or something. "

I find it easy enough to mute.

In a magazine interview years ago he said it was to leave room for the bass.
Does his playing really need 3 D strings?

I liked his example so much I removed 5 of my strings! What an example to set! Makes playing way simple, too!

I leave it on and I have a couple of guitars that stay in open G all the time.

You can leave the low E on if you tune down to D, but it really does sound much better (or Keefier) removed.

Just do your thang. If having it slows you down, setup a guit without for your hot rocks.

Keith removed the low E because, in Open G tuning for which Keith came up with the 5-string Tele, the A string is tuned down to G. And there is no E in Open G tuning so the low E string would have to be tuned down to D which is unnecessarily low for the Stones music.

Firstly, it wouldn't be an E. It would be a D.

If you want a low 5th, then leave it. If you want the bottom string to be the 1, then leave the low string off.

It's basically banjo tuning plus a low 1.

I can play around it, myself. But if you want to be extra sloppy, go ahead and take it off.

I don't remove it when I am in open G, but then again I don't try and mimic Keef either. I really think the 'sloppy' comment is correct. If you just want to bang out stones riffs and have the G as the lowest note without thinking about it or muting the 6th, then you probably want to pull it off.

If ya don’t need it, why have a sixth string? Lazy and sloppy are I.

I also set up the nut to suit 5. I’m using tusq pre-slotted on Allparts necks. As most of you know, the tusq string spacing works on a true 1 5/8”, but you have to trim the ends of the nut slightly. You can shade the nut one way or the other to get more space on either e string, favoring the side you tend to push off more.

For the five strings, I only trim the bass side. If there was a sixth string there it would be right on the edge of the board. Conversely, the little e is brought in a little bit extra, which makes it almost impossible to push off the board (and I can roll the crap out of the board edge, which makes it super-comfy.

I have a tele (avatar) dedicated to Open G with the low string off ala Keef. The root's always on the bottom and it sounds more badass that way, imho. A lot of his low fills happen on that 5th string, and they're easier for me to hit without the 6th string "in the way".

I am almost always playing alone. If in Open G, it just gives me some extra bass
