...is it OK to use the old fashioned vaporizer that uses heat?

I humidify with a real humidifier . I use the condensate water from my furnace for a free supply of clean water . My humidifier has a humidistat control . If you cannot humidify the entire house/building , pick a room and make it your stable room and then get a real humidifier to place in that room . The room can be a closet . Be careful with the in case devices in that they can induce mold or worse with electric guitars by adding too much moisture . This is much more important with acoustic instruments while still an issue for all .

This thing sends water vapor up into the air.
Does that make it a real humidifier?

Yeah, a vaporizer is fine. Put a little Vicks on it and bring back some childhood memories.

I understand otterhounds concerns but that's a little cpap influence.

I use..nothing. A have a lot of instruments over 50 years old, some over 100 years old and older. They predate humidifiers but not low winter humidity.
