The top gun base is down the street from my house. (Though the Navy top gun school part of it has since moved, and the base is now a Marine air station.)

That’s about the best thing I can say about the film.

I got a free still in the wrapper VHS of TG so I dug out the tape player. On a new tv it was so blurry I couldn’t watch it. Remember when TVs were so cute?

No spoilers please!

I’ve never seen it all the way through. I saw the bar scene where Tom Cruise sang to the “Witness” female lead and thought, “This blows.”

My name is Jack "Top Gun" Reacher, I'm short, but I'm loud. I can fly circles around you, and whip twenty-five guys six foot tall without raising a sweat. I was born one morning when the sun didn't shine, so if you're looking for trouble, damn, getting that all mixed up with Elvis. Well, at least Elvis wasn't short.

The new one is supposed to be amazing, and in case you're wondering, Cruise is a serious warbird pilot. He routinely flies his P-51 and that is not something for the faint of heart or without major skills.

One of my best friends worked on the TG2 set, and he said Cruise flew his P51 to the set every day.

Imagine flying your WWII fighter to work every day for months...

I actually respect Cruise quite a bit, because he commits to a crazy level to these movies and he exerts enough control that his movies are consistently entertaining. A buddy recently asked me what I expected from TG2; he referred to the original and how cheesy it was. I told him I think it will be good because Cruise won't let it be bad.

Also, Les Grossman is literally the funniest thing I have ever seen in a movie. NOTE: VULGAR AND HORRIBLE. NSFW.

Like you, I didn't like "Top Gun" when it came out on 1986, and I didn't like it when I gave it another chance a year or two back. And with maybe the exception of "True Romance" i loathe the films of Tony Scott, which look like hour and a half '80s Pepsi commercials (with good reason).

That said, I've read the reviews for the new "Top Gun," and I'm actually excited to see the movie -- something that never happens with me anymore.

The Last Boy Scout?
Crimson Tide?

As you say, True Romance is a largely forgotten classic, but it's pretty difficult to mess up a movie with Tarantino as your writer.

He made some pretty good movies and bunch of ok movies. I have not seen all his movies, but I'm confident that Top Gun is not one of his very best.

My brother flew with the SeaWolves in viet Nam...to qualify for rotary wing he had to qualify in fixed wing landing on a carrier. He said it was the scariest thing he ever did. That's saying something if you know about the SeaWolves action in Nam.
