So... I just watched this video from the familiar chaps and it got me thinking. Am I audially biased?
For those that don't like to follow links: they're challenged to a "one guitar, one amp" setup that coveres a broad range. One chooses a PRS DGT, the other a CS '63 Tele.
First up was a bit of funk. Well of course the Tele sounds wayyy better but I'm still thinking "well, funk is mostly in the technique of the player". But then they try all kinds of styles and each and every time, the Tele won it for me. (The amps were a Deluxe Reverb with the PRS and a Vox AC15 with the tele btw, so both great amps). To me, it was like with the Tele, there was almost a split-signal thing going on: yeah, I'm hearing overdrive, but I'm also still hearing that clean sparkle and chime coming through.
With the PRS it's more like the entire signal gets overdriven by the amp. I know electronics and amps don't work that way of course: both signals 100% get processed by the amp in such a setup. But I just felt (and always have) that PRS's, most Gibsons and certainly -pet peeve- Gretsch's lack character and nuance.

Is this just me discovering (or confirming) that I prefer single coils? Because there are lots of songs recorded with humbuckers that I love of course. And sometimes even for their tone. But it's hardly ever because of the subtlety of their tone, it's mostly just the simple "in your face" kind of thing. When I'm noodling and have a bit of reverb and tremolo going on, I never reach for a humbucker guitar. Actually the only guitar with humbuckers that I find sounds inspiring in that particular way are ES type guitars.

Anyway, here was my rambling, please add yours.

One thing to note is the compression of Youtube. A HB is not as clear as a single, it is just the nature of the beast. Adding compression will thicken up the sound a bit, so the sounds will lose some clarity. I prefer singles for note separation but HBs are stellar for higher gain lead work, this is just what I like. YMMV.

I enjoy that show. I'll have to check that episode out.

Both of those guys has a place they like to be in terms of gear and tone and chops.

It seems to me they often use gear to either get closer to, or farther from their own preferences, if that makes sense.

Did they play each other's rigs? It would be interesting to have several others play those rigs. I bet there would be many different results.

For some reason, my playing style induces a lot of mush / "too many notes" in my sound. Using a single coil is the only way I've found to keep it clean-ish.

You do what works for you. Single coils work for me.

Like you, I prefer single coil pickups (even AS humbuckers) 95% of the time. For me they just have more clarity and dynamics. But, when I need a PAF, nothing but a PAF sounds right. For me thats almost always that chunky rhythm thing.

Pardon? The gretsch hollow body. When you positively, absolutely have to kill in every genre they throw at you…

Mine sparkles, chimes, growls, howls, chugs, probably djents. Rock, jazz, country, blues, it’s there for it.

Does a Gretsch Djent? A Gretsch can do anything!
