Just got offered a Les Paul Black Beauty...

Discussion in 'Fender Custom Shop Tele Forum' started by JRtele, Jul 10, 2020.

Should I trade my CS Tele for LP Black Beauty?

  1. Obviously, LP is worth twice that

If the tele was a gift ,it was from the heart, therefore a keeper ,
I have 22 guitars and many were bought by my wife and I will never sell them, I will sell the guitars I have bought but gift guitars were given to me for a reason and I will pass them on to my kid to do as they please with them.

of course having said that, if i want a guitar I will buy one.

Have you played it? If not, can you play it?

How much would the guy want if you came up with cash some other way?

You stated that the Les Paul is a ‘57 model. If so, it should have the big ‘50’s neck that you dislike (I prefer). I’d go Les Paul.

Oops, just read the statement about the promise to your wife. Better keep the Telecaster and learn to love it.

the easy part and the excitement is the aquisition of new toys , the hard part is loving what you have and making it work for you.

I’m going to play an almost identical one at a store this week before he drives 3 hours and we jam at either ends of my 2 car garage.

Similar year and condition LPs appear to go for $6,000-$7,000Cdn or $6,800 US new - which is money I don’t have sitting around or yes, I would love to buy it and keep both.

I really only can have one. I appreciate whoever said “honestly is the best policy”. If I tried to sneak a purchase like that by Mrs JRtele we’d have a pretty big issue.

Old man talking. You do not want to win that fight.

Tell your wife that you were offered a fantastic Les Paul Custom for the Tele she bought for you, but you turned it down. And don't say it's because you promised. Say it's because you love it. Then later, after she tells you she doesn't mind, go ahead and trade it, you still don't make that trade.

6-7k?, that seems way high, maybe try swapping the neck out with another custom shop neck that you like and then you can keep it forever?or get a luthier to shave the neck down for you to your preferred siZe and refinish

I'd be changing the neck on the Tele if I were you.

I’ve never been in a fight with my unbelievably cool and understanding wife I could assign a dollar value to. Conversely, I’d struggle to think of an amount of money I’d need to be offered to go and pick a possibly-relationship-realigning fight with her out of the blue for no reason at all.

if there wasn’t a path forward for keeping the Tele and buying the Paul, I’d forget it.

Also, if I may proselytize, have you heard the Gospel of Greco? I’ve played half the Les Paul Wall at Chicago Music Exchange, and my CL Greco ‘68 copy felt just as good so I bought it.

.....Hey also for consideration, the neck profile on that BB is more likely than not, very big.

I have an AXL knockoff LP Jr with a no name Chinese P90 that sounds better than my Gibson LP with Classic 57s. If I were to buy another LP it would have P90s for sure.

    .

Probability of a half-priced Gibson Les Paul equals likely headstock repair.
Often undisclosed hoping it will slip by. Or a possible fake.

The wife gift scenario is a problem.

I am amazed that a recent manufacture LPC would sell for that much. Is that a Custom Shop type thing?

Personally, I love LPs and own a 70s LPC, but I'd prefer the Tele because I'm not really into 3 pickup Gibsons. But if it truly is worth twice as much, it's a pretty hard deal to pass up.

You already have a LP that you love.

Find a good luthier and get the neck on the tele shaved to a profile that you like.

Get the guitar you really want. Be careful - do you know the answer to that one? Maybe it's neither.

Respectfully, re-examine your guitar-ownership relationship with your wife. As in, why IS there one? Spend within your budget, and quit begging for approval.
