Recently the world lost Dutch musician Henny Vrienten, who actually was acknowledged by Sting as "the guy who looks like me and sings like me."

But because of the fact that his band Doe Maar (Dutch for "Go right ahead") had most of their songs in Dutch, not many outside the Netherlands and Belgium know about them. They had a song which fits perfectly with this thread.

The song's title translates into "Just one night on my own" and here's a translation of the lyrics.

Don't wake me up, and please leave the curtains closed
My eyes are bleary from the sun's piercing rays
I can't clear my head and my tongue feels like leather
I wanted to go to bed early, but I went out instead
One beer at this place, two whiskeys at another
Flirting with a lady at the midnight bar
She tags along as I want to go home
Her eyes are asking my that question
And I just can't say no

Just one night on my own
Just one night on my own
Don't bother knocking
I locked the door
Let me catch on my sleep
Because it's killing me
One night on my own
Enjoying the silence

Sylvia, Janet, Nathalie, and Gina
Elsie, Trudy, Susan, Babette, Betsy, and Sabine
May, Mary, Candy, Annette, and Angelina
Clairice, Marjory, Marylin, and cute Tina

Just one night on my own
Just one night on my own
Don't bother knocking
I locked the door
Let me catch on my sleep
Because it's killing me
One night on my own
Enjoying the silence

Edwyn Collins is the king of self deprecation. It's a Scottish thing

Since high school in the early '80s, I have been a huge fan of Daniel Amos/The Swirling Eddies/Terry Scott Taylor. Most of their small (but passionate) fanbase considers the two bands' and Terry's music to comprise a single "DA" body of work. ("Daniel Amos" is the band, not an individual person.) DA began recording in 1976, but the DA golden age was the '80s and '90s. Their music is hard to explain--some of it is serious, some of it is humorous, and a lot of it is both. A lot of it is satire. While they are clearly a Christian band, most of their music isn't explicitly so. A lot of their music is just about life. Their sound always was evolving, so they always sounded fresh for their time. Their music has been influenced by great authors and poets, and in turn they are considered one of the most influential bands in 20th century Christian rock. Almost any list of the all-time greatest Christian rock albums will include multiple DA titles. The members of U2 were fans, and Collective Soul have cited them as an influence.

Despite their critical acclaim, they never achieved much commercial success, even by Christian music standards. A lot of their stuff over the past couple of decades has been self-deprecating songs about financial struggles or aging. While there are many more than I have linked below, here is a sampling:

I swore to myself that I'd quickly identify a self-deprecating song by NRBQ, but I struck out. How can it be that Terry and the boys didn't write something like that in 50+ years???

Any ideas? Help me out, here.
