This is the third one like this in the past week, with zero legitimate queries. I can smell them a mile away.

    Aaaaaand here it comes....

I know it's pointless to say naughty things to these parasites who's entire lives seem to revolve around stealing from anyone they can, and Trixie gets a little upset with me when I 'go off' on them, but I explain to her that they don't deserve courtesy nor civility when dealing with them, that they're terrible people, plain and simple, and in this case, are trying to get me to accept a bogus check that will end up costing me thousands of dollars that I cannot afford to lose like this. I've been doing this long enough that I can't be taken by these dirtbags, but they must be getting enough from others to keep such scams worthwhile.

Don't waste your time. They are no doubt running at least hundreds of scams concurrently on every craigslist all over the nation.

Yes, it is pointless to respond like that. But yes, it is difficult not to do so. I have a friend who strings phone scammers along for a bit, then asks “does your mother know you’re a criminal?” He gets some surprising responses.

Anyway, this is exactly why I hesitate to sell things online, even though there’s really no other way these days.

I would have asked for payment to be cleared with the finance company before handing over the title. Maybe they just made a simple mistake.

Sending some gross dick pics would have a similar affect, possibly scar them and prompt them to get a real job if they are scammers.

I usually just ignore all contact if I think they are scammers.

Sorry @John Backlund , for the cl flakes that suck the joy outta turning gear over to get more gear.

I remember having fantasies about that bike. Vivid thx audio, too.

Hope the next shopper is real.

    Peace - Deeve

You always know if it is a scammer if they only communicate by text messages. When I get contacted on my listings, I tell them to call me or else we can't talk business. They never call.

You make that sound like a bad thing.

Why not give some lip to the dirtbag scammers when the opportunity presents itself so blatantly?

I've successfully sold vehicles and guitars on CL, and many items on eBay (hundreds) without any problems, and I'm used to the BS, but I like to let them know that I know what their up to on the occasions that they do pull crap like this.

I sold a Backlund guitar on eBay two days ago, as well as a Strymon Big Sky pedal, and have another Backlund guitar 'on the block' there now. They are duplicates of models I already have. I have had very few problems selling stuff on eBay over the past fifteen years, but CL is another matter.

The next one going on eBay, but NOT on Craigslist, is my two month old, wine red, Epiphone Coupe. I just didn't 'bond' with it and don't play it at all anymore. It's too nice of a guitar to just have hanging around doing nothing. Somebody will love it. It has an Epiphone hardcase too.

Maybe you could have sent him on a wild goose chase to meet you with the fake check.

there's a great episode of This American Life on NPR radio about some guys who string a scammer along and send him off to all these crazy places to collect their money.

I doubt if very many of the legions of CL scammers are even in the US, a lot of them are likely operating from a continent across the Atlantic, though this most recent one does a halfway good job of phrasing, and can spell well enough to sound fairly convincing, most don't.

there are also some hilarious scam-the-scammer sites detailing the elaborate counter-hoax process.

Regrettably, law enforcement is ill-equipped to do anything about these cross-border scam-meisters.
But, they DO have the resources to investigate rogue lemonade-stands. Those enterprising 8 year olds must be stopped...

I kept getting calls from some bunch of jerks, multiple times per day, early morning until late at night. I finally ran the number and found out exactly where it was coming from.

The next time they rang the phone, the guy started his BS pitch, and I interrupted him very abruptly and said, “Tell me something, how’s the weather up there, how’s the view of Central Park today? Can you see it from where you’re sitting?”

The line went dead silent. Then I said, “I’ll tell you what. If you don’t ring this number again, I won’t send someone from the Federal Building on Hudson Street over to see you. Does that sound fair?”

He hung up on me. They never called again.

    When I sell on CL, I state the following right in my listing;
    1. If you still see the item posted, it’s still available.
    2. So, if you ask if it’s still available, you will get no response from me. No exceptions.
This has weeded out a lot of scammers for me.

You could have told them that you would love to do the deal but you are currently working on an offshore oil rig so it will have to wait.

You told him! Apparently, he now has your phone number, what could possibly go wrong.
