Amazing sound and playing! The body does look refinished. Does anyone know if he had it done? Or that it was that way when he bought it? I can't find any pictures with the guitar looking any different....

It's true that he looks slightly full of himself and his way of meowing in the interviews is a little annoying. That's maybe the trap when you're young and talented and too many easy good things happen to you. Still, his playing has something really gracious and I think is very inspiring.

Great stuff - and you may be correct on the refin. Lage inspires me to lighten my grip on the neck - and to learn different voicings for my all-too-common chords. He and Campilongo always surprise my ear.
Oh, yeah, the boy can play!
Where have I heard that before?;):)

I enjoyed that, first time hearing him. I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to jazz, I find the fast scale runs a minor annoyance, but he can play very beautifully, a great talent!

Great player. I agree that his personality leaves a lot to the imagination. He's really snobby and smug and academic, but such is Jazz elitism. Jazz music is incredible though and he's damn good at it.

Very talented. Is he classically trained? Great sounding rig. That refin is a bit too opaque for my taste.

Every interview I've seen he's seemed really friendly and gracious. Maybe I'm missing something. Definitely a little goofy, but haven't noticed any smugness.

I will second that heartily! Cannot figure out where you guys are getting these smug-Lage attitudes from. I've had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Julian a couple of times and he is easily one of the most authentic, kind, and humble artists I've ever met.

I made sure to ask the obligatory gear questions. His responses:
- '54 Blackguard Tele (refin confirmed)
- '58 Champ on tour ('53 2x10 Super on the record)
- Used a Danocaster Singlecut on the record with Ron Ellis pups
- Uses a Strymon Flint on record...and on tour as necessary based on room sound.

Yeah he's ridiculously good. He's probably a great guy. He just has an air of pretentiousness about him. He can have all of these qualities and still be a valuable and credible artist.

Prince, my all time favorite, was pretty pretentious and smug sometimes.

I'm not trying to discredit him.

His guitar face does seem SUPER contrived and distracts me. He's one of those players I should probably just listen to and not watch ;)
